Windows 7 - What crap can I turn off running in the background?

Disabling Aero prevents you from using loads of the new features (which help productivity). Turn it back on.

One thing that you can remove is Homegroup

First, go to the Homegroup settings, then 'leave' it. Now open the Services.msc screen and disable both of the Homegroup services.

Everything else is best left on

i disable all the additional microsoft products.

bitdefender & bitlocker
windows firewall
internet explorer (uninstall completely)
search & indexing services

Windows Error Reporting Service
Windows Media Center Service Launcher
Security Center
Remote Registry
Offline Files
Portable Device Enumerator Service

There is more that i disabled as well. I also removed about 40-50% of the control panel items using gpedit.msc. finally i have a control panel that makes sense. This is what my control panel looks like after removing all the unnecessary items.

Thats interesting Groan, did you actively install Java? Or was it installed as a side effect of putting something on your machine to replace all the bits you were removing?

I've just been playing with Windows 7 and it's not too bad when everything is tweaked to classic style. I can't find a way to get a proper XP classic style start menu though.
I think Win7 is very bad and amaturish when its freshly installed, like XP and Vista. I just prefer a slick and simple Windows OS thats runs my apps (mainly games) to its full potential.

I've got it down to 25 Processes running now, so not too bad. :D

Care to screenshot what you've turned off mate? Had 23 running on XP while idle, would like to get as close to this as possible.

This is a list of all the stuff i've turned off.

Anything that is questionable will have an explanation next to it in brackets. Again, this is just for my computer (other users will more than likley vary) so if you're feeling confident and want to turn the background crap off then feel free to do so.

Instructions:

Hit 'Start' and then type 'MSCONFIG' in the search bar. Hit enter and navigate to the 'Services' tab.

  • ActiveX Installer
  • AVG WatchDog (I'm using AVG, works fine when updating and doing a whole computer scan. I've turned it off from running in the background)
  • Computer Browser
  • Distributed Link Tracking Client
  • Diagnostic Policy Service
  • Diagnostic Service Host
  • Diagnostic System Host
  • Function Discovery Resource Publication
  • HomeGroup Listener
  • HomeGroup Provider
  • Internet Connection Sharaing (ICS) (some users might not have this option)
  • Media Center Extender Service 9some users might not have this option)
  • Offline Files
  • Print Spooler Service
  • Remote Registry
  • Security Center
  • Server
  • Shell Hardware Detection
  • SSDP Discovery
  • Tablet PC Input Service
  • Themes
  • TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
  • UpNP Device Host
  • Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
  • Windows Search
  • Work Station
  • Windows Firewall
  • Windows Time
  • WLAN AutoConfig (Leave turned on if you're using wireless)

If you know any other process that don't need to be running then please feel free to state them here, thanks! :)

Anything left running? LOL May I ask if disabling all those has made any difference in how the PC performs?

I'll do some proper tests with all the stuff running and with the stuff on the list turned off. Seems to be a tiny bit faster but I don't know if that's a placebo effect of turning about 20 things off xD

These are what processes I've got running after a reboot. The PC is running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and only has 512Mb Ram.
