Windows Mail - how to display contacts pane

Can anyone tell me how I can get my contacts list to display in a pane on the side of the Windows Mail application in Vista.

In Outlook Expres you used to be able to have the contacts list displayed under the folders list.

In windows live mail there's a button at the bottom on the left hand side for contacts.

From what I have read, from the Microsoft support newsgroups, it can't be done in Windows mail as it was in OE.
