Hello,
A while back (ages ago in fact), I purchased the full retail version of Windows Vista Ultimate 64 Bit. I want to upgrade to Windows 7 when it's released. When I say I wish to upgrade, I would want to do a full reinstall.

Can someone answer the following questions for me?

1.) What version of Windows 7 am I eligable to upgrade to?

2.) Will I be able to just purchase the Windows 7 Upgrade version

3.) If so, Do I retain the multiple installs on different motherboards but only on 1 at a time license?

4.) If I get the upgrade disk, can I do a full reinstall direct from the new Windows 7 disk?

Thanks

Regards,
Neil

You allowed multiple installs with retail version? I didn't think you were? Or are you if oly 1 is on at a time?

When you upgrade then yes you are not supposed to you vista on any manchine afterwards unless you uninstall windows 7.

1. Unknown at this time - Microsoft have not announced any of the Upgrade Paths

2. There will certainly be an upgrade version, so yes, depending on the upgrade path available to you you'll be able to buy an upgrade.

3. If you are upgrading from a retail version then yes - you are simply upgrading your current Windows Vista license to a Windows 7 license.
You can reinstall any number of times and replace all components including the motherboard.
Single installation at any one time is of course still applicable.
Also note that you are upgrading your license - so in effect your Windows Vista license will no longer exist, so cannot be used seperately from the Upgrade.

4. Unknown at this time.
They removed that ability with Vista - although there was a work around.
Hopefully they will allow you to use the Upgrade alone and all you'll need to do is insert your Vista Disk and confirm a product code.
However, because all Vista DVDs are the same and it is the product key that governs which version is installed, there might be an issue.
For example I could have bought Home Basic.
I could then buy a Vista Ultimate to 7 Ultimate upgrade and when it asked me to prove I owned Vista simply inserting the Home Basic DVD would work.

So expect to have to do more than simply "insert your old Vista DVD" to get the Upgrade to work.

well said. this is the issue that bugs me the work around (s) were flakey or long winded at best. this is an issue for me, as i like to buy the upgrade but also like a clean hassle free install
