Any here?

We like Shiraz, Rioja and Valpolicella (sp) so that's pretty much all we drink.

Time to expand our horizons - so any suggestions?

Not overly keen on spending >£10 a bottle though, unless it's something really special.

Fire away wino's. :)

Not really an expert, but I found for circa £5 a bottle

Chilean wine - very good
Argentine wine - very good
Italian wine - very good.

If you like Valpolicella look out for Ripasso. It's Valpolicella that's been poured (or something like that) over the lees of the Amarone. It gives the Valpol a completely different taste and is well worth trying. You can get it in Tesco at the moment (they do a Tesco own for around £6.99 and a premium at around £8.99) and probably other places as well. Majestic also had some
at about £9.99. Someone described the difference between normal Valpol and Ripasso as being the difference between a Mini and a Ferrari.

Plenty decent Rioja's about and if you like them look out for the "cheaper" wines from Ribera del Duero in Spain. Oddbins used to do a Dehesa la Granja which is 100% Tempranillo (like a lot of Rioja's) for around a tenner. Although classed as a table wine (Vina de Mesa) it's fantastic and if you like Rioja you'll like this. Don't know if they've got any left at the moment though, the last lot I saw was 1998 and I think it's probably done by now although you would probably get it from someone like Corney & Barrow but only by the case.

Shiraz ain't really my own personal taste but no doubt there will be others here who can recommend something on those lines.

I'd agree that Chilean wines are some of the best value around at the moment; Argentinian Malbecs can be very good too. New Zealand does a few nice Pinot Noirs which are usually much cheaper than the equivalent French Burgundies, and are well worth trying.

If you can find it try a Hardys Oomoo Shiraz, can be picked up for a good price and it's a great drop.

No white drinkers then?

Costco have an excellent Premier Cru Mersault 2004 for just under a tenner a bottle. A steal!

BTW - if you ever do need wine in significant quantities, they are well worth a look.

If you fancy something a bit different, try one of the botrytis dessert wines - some of the Aussie botrytis semillon or riesling wines are gorgeous.

I know bugger all about wine but I recently discovered that Australian plonk is surprisingly good, the unclutured swines can actually crush a nice grape. Check out Wolf Blass red labels.

If you like Rioja, check out Pinot Noir, like Rioja, but less fruity and much smoother. Goes down a treat. You might like Beaujoulais too, but not sure.

I'm currently enjoying Galeo white grenache, very fruity rosé, also Blossom hill white zinfandel rosé. but i'm a total n00b to wine :D

Bordeaux wines ..... easy to get a crap one - but with a bit of research about the various apellations and chateaux you can get some some stonkers for about 10-15 quid.

Chatuex Super Tennants, some full bodied fruity numbers with hints of urine and wee undertones.
