Yes it's a serious question. After watching the first tv series I'm wondering if I should go straight to book 2 or if it's worth reading 1 first.

As I've said before, it's probably because he never planned to write it.

Didnt he take 5 years and got ****** off with all his fans complaining and his repsonse was that he had other things to do for a living? That;s the bit that worries me that there may never be a final book before he dies.

On the other hand his book sales must be through the roof by now after the tv season so if he has any sense he will write the final books.

Have to say it was definitely an interesting end to the series but i kinda saw it coming as i finished reading the first book before the last episode...fully recommend people to read the first book as the series leaves a lot of background out....in fact the final episode missed out quite a chunk of the book.

Cant wait for the next series...reading the second boom, at about 350 pages thru it and i just hope that the next series pays more attention to the book....second book is immense though and all i will say is that Tyrion the dwarf is fast becoming my fave character....moreso after reading the second book.

Its hefty reading though...all 4 books are but im bloody well enjoying every page so far.

If you haven't read the books then you need to know that each chapter is told from a particular character's point of view e.g. Eddard, Bran, Tyrion etc while at the same time progressing the story. In book 4 this deviates slightly in that the author has picked a set of character POVs but not all the character POVs. Worse still, the characters he's picked aren't our favourites (won't name any, don't want to spoil whose still alive ;) ).

I heard that book 5 will tell the same story as in book 4 but from the characters left out POV. Book 4 is still a good book imo - plenty of treachery and intrigue but it does feel like a bit of a half-assed job.

Ah right, thanks.

Am on book 2 at the mo and kept hearing things about 4 but that doesnt sound too bad.

I've just finished episode 4 so haven't read the 43 pages of this thread but I will do so eventually. Have to say, it's outstanding. I haven't been this hooked on a TV programme since Legend of the Seeker. :D Good to hear that HBO have commissioned a second season. Now on to episode 5...

Just putting it out there, anyone who has enjoyed these great books should also look into reading The Wheel of time, there are 13 books alltogether and a 14th and final coming out in 2012.

I had these books passed down to me from my dad and loved them but it does go a bit wobbly like feast for crows in some of the books but mostly are great and well worth the time. :)

Seconded. I read all of those before GOT cropped up. It was only by chance that one summer holiday at the airport I picked up the first book when book 3 was out and thought it was a trilogy. 10 years later I am still waiting to read to the last book lol.

All of the books are massive but it is a brilliant story and well thought out. I would agree that in some books it can get a bit bogged down and sometimes hard to remember after about 10,000 pages what has happened but once I have read the last book I will be reading them, all again from the beginning.

Personally I found them really hard to get into, and im an avid fantasy reader... just wasnt my cup of tea. May try them again at some point though when I run out of other stuff to read.

To be honest I found the first book really hard and had to keep pushing myself to read it. The first book is basically about 800 pages of background and introducing the characters.

Imagine if Tolkein had written 800 pages about the hobbits before they even left on their journey to meet Gandalf and you will get the idea.

Once things kick off though and there are major, major battles, magic, magic items, wolf men, Trollocs, etc you find you can't put the books down.

just watched the last episode

WOAH HOLY ****

Excellent ending to an amazing first season of an awesome show. I didn't know they would actually show dragons, very dramatic etcetc, anyway, looking forward to season 2 for sure.

Thoroughly enjoyed this series. Was very sceptical when it first aired but got into it straight away. Season 2 should be a cracker.

LOL, only half way through now but was just going to ask that. They keep showing shots of the dragon eggs seemingly being thawed so I was hoping there'd be dragons at some point.

Any value in reading 'The Hedge Knight' as I gather it's a prequel of sorts?

Havent read it but i heard it's in comic form speach bubbles etc so if your into that sort of thing plus i dont think it has any real impact on the other ice and fire books.

It was originally a comic, but can be found in standard written form in Martin's collection of short stories Dreamsongs Vol 2.
