Wireless network issue

I have a Netgear DGN2000 and when i enable wireless, set the channel to Auto, set the speed to up to 270 mbps, enable broadcasting SSID and Access Point and use WPA2-PSK, my girlfriend is completely unable to connect, even with excellent signal strength.

We've tried buying a USB wiresless thing and that was having the same issues.

There are a lot of wireless networks around where we live.

Just wondering if anyone could provide us with some help?

Thanks.

First of all pick a channel (1, 6 or 11 as they dont have cross overs with their neighbours).

Make sure your router is allowing the 54meg 802.11g) connections through.

What type of encryption are you using?

How do i check if its doing that?

Will check the manual if i can find one on-line.

But there should be something in the wireless section to choose your connection type.

802.11n only
802.11 n&b/g mixed.

I would suggest that you set the router to 54mrg B&G mode and try that. It is possible that the wireless device on your gf's laptop does not like the netgear router. The theory behind 802.11 xxx standard is that all devices will talk to each other but that is sometimes not the case.

It'll be mac filtering. Either add her MAC address to the allowed list, or disable it.

To find her mac address, in a command prompt type the following.

ipconfig /all | find /i "physical"

Was going to suggest this next, but as he says all he has done is set the speed, I'd doubt it was MAC filtering, but hey you never know.

Changing it to G and B only didnt have any effect.

Some of the strange things are one moment she can see the network through windows with excellent strength and then the next minute for 1-5 minutes she cant even pick up the router.

Is the laptop running on battery power - if so make sure that the davice is not set to be switched off to save power.

I would try and get the latest drivers for the wifi device as well.

Hey sorry about the late reply.

The laptop is plugged in and is on high power setting.

Were not sure what type her wifi device is, as its a HP branded laptop.

Thanks.

Try it without any encryption AS A TEST. Then try different types of encryption. In my experience encryption incompatability is sometimes a problem.
