Woke up to find £700 taken from my paypal on my birthday

Tell seller to cancel order and refund you ?

Otherwise he's going to lose the product and money

If he hasn't refunded or said he will refund you could he not be in on it all ?

Worst, "It's my birthday!" thread ever ;)

Looked at that link for the security key. Do you guys use the mobile phone one or the actual key that costs $29.95?

thanks for the help guys, i panicked and removed the bank card from the paypal account. But then thought, how will paypal refund me now :S ? shall i add the card back? or will they still be able to refund my card?

if they can't refund to the card it'll go in as PayPal balance. I'd leave it off until you work out how the order was made and lock it down.

I use the mobile phone one, but the site lets you log in without it :/ You have to enter your Mother's maiden name or your bank account number etc.

Paypal is perfectly safe without any additional security provided you use a decent long non-dictionary password and ONLY ever log in on systems you know are clean/secure.
ALWAYS assume a computer is compromised unless you know for sure otherwise!!

**EDIT**
Happy Birthday dude and don't worry either PayPal or your Bank will sort your money out :-)

Happy birthday OP, it's mine tomorrow!

Also, I never knew about the Paypal Secure Key. How long has it been around? I am surprised they don't make it more widely advertised or known about... unless I have just totally missed it.

I have my main bank account linked to Paypal and never had any issues, although I now have the Secure Key for my mobile for the extra security :)

You say you've removed your bank card... if they let you add it again, make sure you don't remove it again. The reason I say this is I used to use my paypal account for something, and if I didn't use it for at least 6 months I'd just close it down. However, this led to them eventually stopping me from adding the same bank account again for when I'd create a new account which meant I had to set up a new bank account just to use Paypal. However, this new bank account is only used for Paypal and so it only has 12p in it (courtesy of Paypal).

You're fine, as far as your bank account is concerned. When it appears on your bank account tell the bank it's fraudulent, and they'll reverse it and investigate.

Which bank is it?

shall i call the seller? if so what shall i say?

Unbelievable Phone the police! or ....

you ring them and tell them that £700 has gone from your Paypal account and that their details are on your Paypal page. Are you so naive you don't know what to do?

Did you get any PayPal phishing emails OP? Thats usually how these accounts get compromised. Sometimes its a keylogger or trojan thats how my credit card got cloned I believe.

I'd report the transaction as fraudulent to your card company too, they ought to issue a chargeback even if PayPal are uncooperative.

Got an email today from Paypal:

'We've finished reviewing your unauthorised activity claim and you'll
receive a refund for the transaction amount. It may take up to five working
days for the funds to appear in your account.'

Just need to wait for my money to get back into my account now..

I want to thank all of you guys for all your help and suggestions, love OCUK!

PS. I will let you guys know when the money arrives in my account just so other people in this situation can use this info.

i think it was some virus on my pc, i did a check with Kaspersky and got no threats.

So i then download Microsoft Security Essentials and got 4 threats, 2 of which were medium threat and the other 2 being High threats. The high threat ones were called 'Exploit:HTML/IframeRef.Z' and 'Exploit:Java/CVE-2012-0507.CA'.

I am not sure if this was the actual cause tho, but it must have been because there is no way someone would have guessed my password! its $"! numbers, lower case and upper case letters...
