Woman eats cereal while driving her Land Rover

You'll just be inconveniencing people with cars instead.

If there is a cycle path, damn well use it. It was put there for a reason... I expect it was because it was noted that the road is often used by cyclists, and they were at risk because of insufficient space to pass safely/impatient drivers etc. If you get knocked off when you're not using the designated path provided for you, you should be held at least partially accountable imho.

This is rubbish though. Cycle lanes are generally built so the council hits a target. If they were built for cyclists then they would continue when the road narrowed as that's when they are actually needed; instead they disappear as there 'isn't enough room'. It's just dumb.

The council here just narrowed the main road to build shared usage paths on each side, despite every cycling organisation in the area saying it was stupid. It's full of pedestrians and cyclists would have to give way every 20m at a side road. No-one uses it and now there is no space to overtake. Dumb.

Cyclists are not obliged to use cycle paths. I refuse to use them. I am legally allowed to use the road so I will.

And this is the why we all clash. I agree you're allowed to use the road and shouldn't feel pressured by other road users too just because it would suit them better however to simply refuse to use them full stop?

I can see the view point from both sides but some of you just shut options out and this is why you all end up coming to loggerheads.

Here's newcastle/gateshead

look how fragmented the cycle paths are and most of them aren't even on roads but old wagon ways and just paths across town moors or through parks

I'm guessing from my knowledge of the terrain the green ones are ones on paths, the other colour are roads with a cycling lane strip down the edge
make sure you zoom right in if you look at your cities

This was a very stupid idea. Shared pedestrian / cycle paths do not work at all well, regardless of whether you have a bell and wear high viz clothing. In general if there is space pedestrians will fill it totally and have a habit of simply not wanting to move at all. Some councils just do not listen. Similar thing has happened here in Southampton. They removed a roundabout at the bottom of the Itchen bridge on the town side to make it safer for cyclists. It is truly an awful junction that seems to confuse most and cause unneeded congestion.

This seems like madness.
Cycling without buses and lorries passing you makes cycling perfect.
It seriously reduces your chances of being mangled under a car/bus/lorry.
Just think one day should you have an accident on the road (hope you never do!) and there was a cycle path, you will be facepalming big time.

Not worth breaking your leg over being righteous :(.

You live about 1/2 mile from this road and cycle lane/path - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.9...nxBYaNVSMLyCcAj-8MhA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en

It starts at that point and then keeps jumping on to the pavement and then off - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.9...uryHTx4ymh3qJyg15oKA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en
To make it worse a bit further up you jump on the pavement and every house has got what looks like a drain so you have to slow down to 5mph so you don't ruin your bike.
Hilton Road near the hospital has got excellently placed cycle lanes but unrideable because of the the tree roots (and glass).

Also (I may be wrong) cycle paths are 15mph and I would feel like a snail going at that speed.
Pedestrians also like to just wander into them when there is a pavement available and I can't count the near misses.
Every cyclist will tell you that a cycle lane is speed up, slow down, speed up, slow down because of pedestrians.
If they made nice cycle with no bumps lanes that pedestrians couldn't wander into and raised the speed to 25mph then I'd use them.

That is quite frankly retarded, the law should be changed like here, a sign ''cycle path'' means it is mandatory to use it for cyclists. On a yellow plated moped I actually hate the fact that in many cities you have to go in between cars now, instead of on the cycle paths like before. Cycle paths are much safer and nicer than faffing about between cars. Especially in rush hour, filtering slows you down greatly compared to simply bombing it down a cycle path full throttle.

Any time someone suggests this, I post this video:

We have the same problems, people steeping out and walking in them, they are too narrow and cars often park in them and other obstructions. I tend to avoid them.

That situation is going to arise very rarely, and when it does, you can use those two levers on your handlebars which slow you down. But as a cyclist, I doubt you know what they're for. ;)

Stop being silly...

I'm guessing you've not tried to stop quickly from 25mph on road bike with supper skinny tyres pumped up to 100psi and you shoes are locked into pedals? Scary is an under statement.

Just the same as a car driver can use the brakes when they encounter a cyclist.

Horses do not belong on the road but on horse paths.

It's Western Europe not Bulgaria/Romania.

I'm not anti cyclist, I find it hard understand why you'd want to be between cars when you have cycle paths, but indeed, I have no idea how rubbish or good the paths are in the UK. I do dislike cyclists who are willingly blocking fast traffic though.

You're in the Netherlands which has the best cycling infrastructure in the world with dedicated segregated cycle lanes what with have in the UK is far from that. Cycle lanes here are not usually suitable if you ride a fast rider.

Welcome to the lanes of death

Might as well stick a cycle lane down the centre of the m1 or something, it's probably the only thing more dangerous

Arknor: Oh my that is just crazy!

Gave my bike to the scrappy this week. Not used in since I got a car 10 years ago!
I have no idea what it is like cycling according to the highway code, as when I was 15 I'd just use the pavement.
When I used to work nearer home I didn't buy a new push bike. Getting to work with a sweaty gouch is not for me!

The bike lanes in Amsterdam weren't much good for fast cycling either, but nor was the bike I had rented. It was however a joy travelling the city.

They like sticking cyclists in the bus lanes with buses and only lorries over 7.5tons

Welcome to the lanes of death[/QUOTE]

I never got this either. I'd say 90% of my issues with road users is down to buses. :(

I'd love to ride on a 2m wide segregated route that has priority over side roads on my 22mile commute. CS8 for 3 miles is as good as it gets and scooter pilots seem to think it's for them too.

Anyone who doesn't know how to use a speaker on a phone when driving to take a call shouldn't be allowed behind a wheel.

As for eating...is it because it a bowl and spoon not a cereal bar ?

Except studies have proven the danger isn't having the phone to your ear, it's the distraction of the conversation. Putting your phone to your ear is a very simple motor task for humans. The risk is being distracted to other psychological issues when conversing, so handsfree or not the risk is pretty much exactly the same.

There you go then, I'm always between around 18 to 25 mph and in some places I can easily hit 30mph so not safe on a cycle lane.
We've had some put in on our hospital grounds and I do use them but twice I've been knocked off by motorists who just drive into them. Luckily since it's a 10 mph speed restriction they've done no damage.

And here's another problem, where you can see the name Brownsea Place is the start of my main cycle route to work & back - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.9900292,-2.1611871,189m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en
It's an excellent shared path/cycle path that takes me down to Stoke's football ground and over the canal but the main problem is that for 9 months of the year I'm dodging glass. About 2 months ago I counted 43 smashed bottles on that path after one match and luckily my kevlar tyres held out.

So chatting to a passenger is dangerous ?
