What was initially thought to be a lesion, a 22-year-old woman was later told she had a nipple growing on her left foot, complete with hair and an areola. Closer examination also showed sebaceous glands, eccrine glands and fat tissue.
The findings were consistent with pseudomamma, a condition whose diagnosis includes supernumerary breast tissue. It is the first known case involving the foot.
Other documented locations are the thigh, face and back, and have been known to lactate. A condition such as this, where autonomous self-organization seems to be taking place lends credence to the ability to easily grow breast tissue in a laboratory.
