In 2 today for me. After 4 or 5 days of missing almost everything on my first word I finally hit some.

Completely wrong first guess and then two letters in wrong place for 2nd which didn't set me off to a good start
Also confused by the NYT purchase, just cannot see the game keeping up its current momentum, and putting behind a paywall will surely take 99% of the appeal out the game. On the flip side...Kudos on the developer for achieving a 7 digit sale though
