Work done by garage but not requested/asked

To change the crank seal you would have to remove the gearbox, clutch and flywheel.

Changing the clutch at the same time just means you fit a new clutch rather than the old one.

3 hours for a gearbox change is easy enough

All that work, all in for £170?

3 hours labour at the worst garage you can find plus parts is still going to be more than £170!

I'd still argue the toss and complain they did work without your say so and say you don't want to pay for it, no matter how cheap the clutch may or may not be you did not ask for the work and therefore it is unacceptable. There is also the chance that they are having you on thinking you won't know the difference.

Been around and seen them on way home from work complained about not been told and they didnt do the work that was agreed at £100 ended up meeting him half way at £145

What on earth?
Yeah, I would expect £25 an hour labour in Sheffield.

This.

It's really nothing special. Would have been silly not to fit a new clutch while the box was off and it was worn. It is however a bit out of order to nearly double a bill without so much as a phone call.

On the subject of Sheffield, can anyone recommend an indi garage? My friend up there bought oil + filter and fuel filter for his Vectra and wants to pay someone to change them for him.

If it was my car I would have wanted them to notify me before doing any work, especially with the clutch, because how would they know what I would want it replaced with? For instance I don't want a standard clutch replacement I want a paddle clutch or RS clutch when the clutch goes on my focus, and possibley a different flywheel, so that would require more work to remove a new standard clutch.

I took my car in for a service, they rang saying my brakes need doing very soon (£120), I did them myself for £60, I'd be well anoyed if they just did them.

Leaking oil into a clutch tends to cause issues. Whilst them no informing you wasn't great, at least it means they don't have to take the box off again!
