Flash is a pain in the backside. Always has been, and environmentally unfriendly revving up CPU's and GPU's for adverts. Drives some laptops fans nuts, reduces battery life. I'm surprised it's got so bad a P4 3.2Ghz can't handle it however, but some websites abuse it.
Why not just install the Firefox addon Flashblock? You get a play button for all flash, default deny running it. Works wonders. I can surf on a PIII 700Mhz laptop fine, using Flashblock and if you want to go further, Adblock plus. Great for Netbook Atoms too.
You probably should be looking to update, some fantastically cheap dual core machines these days that use much less power than a P4, but I thought I'd make you aware.
