Worried about your expensive phones?

I'm more worried about breaking it or spilling drinks on it than it being stolen.

touche

However, when i was younger i was far more vigilant when using my phone due to my size i suppose and using public transport a lot as those are the times imo when you are most at risk of getting mugged on your way home alone. But nowadays having a car to go everywhere and being only in built up areas all the time the element of danger isnt there anymore in getting mugged

i think im the opposite. i get annoyed when people buy cases and screen protectors in fear of them getting scratched, it's just a phone fgs. one of my friends has a flip case on his desire HD, makes it twice as big!

A mint condition phone sells for a LOT more second hand if you like to ride the upgrade wave independent of contract length. ;)

1) There are a LOT more smartphones around these days, they're not a rare luxury comodotiy anymore. I cant say i've heard of anyone being mugged just for a phone for about 6 years!

2) I'm a reasonably sized bloke so not an "easy" target

3) Who cares anyway, it's insured, it has a remote block app on it....ill just pay my 30 quid excess and get a new one

1 - The price is all that matters. High end phones are sellable to european countries where the blacklist doesn't work. It doesn't really matter that they have become common - it just means there are more opportunities to nick em.

2) I don't think the majority of thieves stick around for a fight :) They just run off with it.

I'm sorry to disappoint Tim but I have a second phone for going out to concerts and the like. It's easier to switch my sim to a 6310 for the night and not worry about anything rather than lose a few hundred quid and time to sort a replacement.

Do people have a quick look around before taking they're phone out to use in some public places? I just ask as... some of the the smart phones out these days are seriously expensive. I personally know one or two people (not proud of it) who wouldn't think twice about knocking you out (and have done) just for a nice phone. Suppose the same think goes for quality watches and the like but phones are an easier touch I'd say.

I'm not a big mobile user (I use a Samsung E1080 so not to worried) but wouldn't walk about town talking away on an iPhone 4 or similar like the world was a crime free place where people wouldn't think of such a thing. Maybe I just live in a dodgy area?

Not really :p They can try running off but I'd probably let them keep it if they can outrun me lol!

And shortly after I'd track it via GPS, find them, then hit them with my keyboard ¬_¬

I have no data to back this up, but phone related crimes are probably quite high in my area. I'm not really too concerned about it personally as:

a) I'm not really the flashy kind of guy who has a need to get their phone out unless its neccesary

b) I'm think more than capable of handling things myself should it come to that.

I'm much more concerned about my mum, who sometimes gives me a call on her way back from work late at night, or my little sister.

I also use an old crappy nokia if going to a gig/festival or something. = )

By the way, is it true that blacklisted phones may work fine in other regions? eg. Asia? I hear this a lot.

Both my phone and SIM card are PIN locked. The phone is replaceable but I definitely worry about people getting into my e-mail, etc.
Me too. It's easy to insure a phone but what if someone gets into your email/FB etc. Then you get into really dodgy ground!

On that note, I'm assuming the first thing to do if your phone got stolen would be to change your Gmail/FB passwords? This might be a stupid question, but would that lock you/the thief out of those things on your phone?

Had a couple people try and pick pocket me before - didn't turn out well for them.

No one's ever full confronted me for my phone since I was 12-13 - even then I just took legs and out run them.

Now I'm 195lbs, 6'1 and been boxing for 4 years. I think it's the confidence that plays the biggest role. As I'm a fool with my belongings - leave them on show all the time.

Pin lock + Remote lock + Alerting Mobile carrier + not *seeming* like a pussy.

To expand on the two times I was "pick-pocketed".

Once was in a local club I used to DJ at so good friends with the bouncers/djs/barman etc. On the dancefloor having a laugh when I feel some guy touch my back pocket (thinking it might be a girl I turned round with a smile ha) saw this shady guy on the corner of the dancefloor with my ID (passport at the time) in his hand - he went to run into the toilets. I followed him pretty calm, spoke to Guy (the hand washer bloke) who told me he went in a cubical. Got my mates in with me and defused the situation; he came out and was barred. Saw him 2 weeks later hanging around outside and.. he won't be robbing anything again if he's got any brains.

2nd time I was drunk; on the bus with my phone out texting. Managed to fall asleep (as you do) with my phone out. Heard a ruckas up the stairs (3 black youths) - stayed half awake incase of any trouble. Felt one of them lean over the back of my chair. Without even thinking twice about it I stood up turned around and hooked him for one (ironically, my iphone flew onto the floor I stood up so fast; and shattered on the corner). His mates were making loads of noise "What did you do that for?!" etc.

Anyway, apologised to the driver when I got off, explained I was being pickpocketed and that was the end of it. Kid was probably 18-19. Didn't say a word to me when he came too.

do people even bother thesedays when people can get them blocked so easy ?

its a risky (assault ?, GBH?) crime for something that will be unusable in a few hours and un-sellable because everyone knows this

id put it on par with randomly carjacking someone :p , yea you've just stole something really easily compared to what its worth but what are you going to do with it next ?

A mint condition phone sells for a LOT more second hand if you like to ride the upgrade wave independent of contract length. ;)

maybe about £50 or so on a smartphone ?

id rather lose the money and not completely ruin the look and feel of my phone !

oh and people that buy a cheap nokia for going out and leave their iphone at home, sigh:(

haha.

If you want to sell your phone no scratches helps massively with the price another reason for cases and screen protectors, if I saw a phone advertised with scratches I would brush past it and find another shows the phone hasn't been looked after properly.

life to short to worry about a phone... you lose it, get it nicked or smash it buy a new one.

only thing I would have to do is change passwords sharpish on mail accounts etc

i was actually coming in here to say "life's too short", I'd never let the threat of it being taken off me stop me from having something I want. Some people let it stop them buying nice cars and stuff too, I could never let that **** affect me else what's the point in living!
