Worse job advert ever?

Seriously? n/m saw your reply.. sad times.

Seriously? That's really screwed up, what an **** hole. Do you actually have a family to have tax credits? Also... kids are expensive... more so as they get older.... what a *****.

It's exactly the same up here. Most of the area relies on tourism so most jobs are minimum wage. Most of the retailers and factories are also minimum wage. My partner works in the shortbread factory in the village. 77% of the workforce are Polish or Portuguese (even higher in the Elgin factory), she is up at 4.45am in the morning to be picked up at 5.30am for a 6am start and earns 12.5k a year.

See I just don't know anyone on that low a wage down here (Oke, Laun, Hols, Bude area) which is why I find it surprising. I know people in all walks of life down here and they are all on over min wage, including hotel staff (apart from 16-18 year olds doing part time in cafes etc.). I've also known a few who worked the summers/part time down in Newquay and they too were on more than min wage. Sounds more like your employer is taking the pee and you're just accepting it to be honest.

It's like that all over Cornwall. I am from Penzance originally and most jobs down there are minimum wage. Wages do not keep up with the cost of living down there. I could never afford to move back home even if i wanted to. My eldest son moved to Bristol just so that he could earn a decent wage and have half a chance of owning his own house one day.

No, I'm single, no children, it's surprising how many people think you can only claim tax credits if you have a family.

I must admit when tax credits first came out I was pretty chuffed, but now I'm starting to think it was a bad idea, initially it was about trying to get people into at least part time work with some extra cash to help them, but from what I've been seeing it's been turning a lot of full-time work into part time, because the government have made it a lot easier to live on part time wages employers take advantage of that, they can trim the fat off your hours because they know your get tax credits, where as back in the day if my boss cut my hours I would have to leave the job and neither I or my boss wants that, so they would keep you on full time.

aint that the truth!
was looking at a change of job, maybe in education (IT Support) but every job offers in the region of £13-14k and want you qualified up the ****!
and then you're expected to work extra hours for free!

And that's the problem with the minimum wage, no one will pay any higher because they don't have to. And its a complete joke, the minimum wage is meant to be enough to live on according to the govnt ... lol.

looking at jobs ads makes me realise just how much this country has gotten poorer over the last 10 - 15 years and most people dont even realise it.

For example, about 13 years ago i worked for a few months behind the counter in the local bank, and my salary was 15k - i was 18, no experience (other than supermarket stuff), and the job was basic customer service type stuff.

When I was 17 I was getting around £5.50 per hour at the local safeway, again this was about 14 years ago.

Wages for those types of jobs (which a large proportion of the population are employed in - retail, customer service, sales etc) have barely risen in 15 years, however the cost of living has rocketed. Back then, 60k was enough to buy a 3 bed semi detached house in my area, now the same houses are going for 200k+ the same is true for food, petrol, and virtually everything else.

Perfectly serious, most people I know down here (Newquay) work in hotels/bars/restaurants/shops/supermarkets, 16k a year is a like a dream wage to most people down here.

Also many people down here are over the last few years seem to be getting their hours cut back due to tax credits, my boss actually said that "well your wages are supplemented by the government" when I asked for more hours, I used to earn over minimum wage but since the advent of tax credits I'm back on minimum wage because the way the boss sees it is why pay me more when the government will pay the extra.

This system is so f'd up atm.

It was the same in East Devon, all jobs were Catering/Retail or Carework, it sucked big time. Moving away was my only option for a decent wage and thankfully i did. The people i know who live there are still in the same jobs for the same money, it really is quite sad.
Its unfortunate for these areas that the only money coming into the area is from tourism, and thanks to all the shops etc being large corporations none of that money stays in the area. Its easy to see why Bristol wants to start using its own currency.

it is an apprentice position is it not ?

If so what exactly do you expect an apprentice to earn ?

Surely the whole point of this job is that the successfull candiate learns much of their trade on the job thus getting something more valuable than financial remuneration ?

Well, of course, there isn't going to be bucket loads of disposable income, ha. However, I don't think it'd mean living in poverty, or whatever.

I think after bills, rent, necessities etc, you would be left with little over £150 a month, if that!

Thank god I'm not in such a possition.

Reading posts on here I am starting to question my own pay :o. 12-16k a year for an "apprenticeship" scheme isn't a bad shout. Especially if the first sixth months of that will be being baby sat potentially.

Meh I live in an area where the main job sector is tourism + leisure, there is a decent sized NHS presence here but that's about it.

So do I sit and think poor me I'm doomed? No, I accept the fact that's how it is living in an area like this and you have 2 choices, move or look further afield for work.

My first few jobs were all 25/35 miles away from where I lived, current job is 100 miles down the motorway (although don't have to go to the office everyday).

So out of interest the people who are stuck in areas where jobs are few and far between, and very low paying, how far afield are you looking and also are you looking for any 'skilled' types of work, a specific profession, or just looking for anything you can get?

Employers playing the system:eek:, who would have thought it........

That's plain bad lowrider, I hate your boss for you and all the other bosses who do it.
