Hey guys just thinking about getting another 512mb gts to sli

Current spec is
Q6600 @ stock
8gb ram
512mb 8800gts BFG edition
24" monitor @ 1920x1200

Or worth just going for a bigger single card?
:D

Thanks

Of course, it depends on your budget, but a new, more powerful card makes sense - better performance per watt and £, dx11 and quieter and would take up much less power that a couple of 8800gts's. Something like a 560 or 6870 would be a good upgrade from an 8800gts

Don't think it'd make enough difference. Could be worth a go though if you could pick one up (should cost next to nothing now).

one more "expensive / better range" card is better than two "cheaper / bottom range" cards...
So personally, for gaming....

Nope.....

Unless your rig is only going to be running silly graphics games like minecraft lol

Given the price of a comparable performance or faster single GPU is so low it doesn't really make much sense but it would be a fair boost performance wise from what you have now - in SLI they wouldn't be that far behind a GTX460/AMD5850 tho without the benefits in VRAM and reliant on SLI compatibility for performance.

I had 8800 GTS 512 SLI for a while, changed it for a GTX280 as my case was a little crowded. Very similar performance and power usage but 1GB Vram.

GTX 280's are cheap second hand now ~ £50 and would be a better option than a second GTS. You could sell your GTS to offset the cost. You'll need a good quality 500W+ PSU.

If you want a newer card with DX11 support and similar performance to the GTX280 you'll be looking at £130+

Thanks guys! Well I have always wanted to play with sli, if I can get a card cheap I will give it a try, I got a 512 mb 8800gt but I don't think you can use them in sli?

Not officially and I don't reccomend it - you _can_ flash both cards with a modified firmware and make it work as they use the same cores but when I experimented with it it seemed to result in moderate to severe microstutter.

I can't understand it when people say or recommend to buy a graphics card now and then buy another for sli in a few years when they need it.

In nearly all cases I have seen or heard of, said person has decided to sell their current card and buy a new more modern one instead.

Has anyone bought a year old card or a two year old card for SLI/Crossfire?

I've never bought a year old one that I can recall but a couple of times I've picked up the 2nd card 5-6 months later.

I usually pick up the second card within a few months of the first, though saying that, the 470's in my sig were bought within the space of a few weeks. The price on the second one was too good to miss. Ive also just bought two gtx 460's in the space of a week to go into another rig i have, both identical gigabyte 1gb 460's, all the sli systems ive owned over the years have used identical brand cards.

Yep, had a 5850 since launch, added another just recently. Still a good performer on their own, excellent where CF is supported properly
