Worth getting a 5D MKII now ?

Is battery grip a necessity for 5DMII? and which Intervalometer(Is this even the right word?) to use for time lapse video?

I've got my grip coming tomorrow, i'll let you know what i think.

Though not necessary, i like the feel of the grip on my 60d, balances the camera out nicely, expect the same with the 5d, having read many reviews.

I havent read the rest of the thread but that guy complaining that the 5D's focus is not good enough to focus on a perfectly still model using one of the outer focus points either has a faulty camera or is using a really rubbish lens inside a cave, or is simply doing it wrong.

Yes, the 1 series bodies will have better AF than a 5D, but that is noticeable with moving targets, in AI servo/focus, for example in a sports photography situation. For a single shot of a model that is standing still the AF of the 5D and 1 series models would be indistinguishable.

I'd personally see what the 5DIII offers first. If anything you'll find the second hand market more saturated with Mk2's, hopefully at a cheaper price thanks to the gear-heads. ;)

I'm personally looking for a minty fresh Mk1.

Now, aren't we glad we bought and enjoyed the MkII for these last few months instead of waiting ? Quite frankly, there's zero feature of the MkIII I'd particularly want!

To be honest yes, the 5D MKII was a very good purchase for me, it's managed to relight my photography interests and I'm very, very pleased with the results so I don't regret for one second not waiting.

As for the MKIII, will I get one.. maybe.. but at the moment the MKII does everything I want (and probably a lot more) so I'm in no rush to change anything at the moment. My money will go on some extra Lenses and other kit which will be of more use. I'm off to the FOI show tomorrow where I'll be getting a 70-200 2.8L IS and a Panoramic head for my tripod plus some other bits I have no doubt.

So, how did you find your new grip? Was it too bulky?

It's nice actually.

The 60D grip is ergonomically better, the 5D grip is a little squarish if i'm honest.

But it's nice to have, again helps when shooting portrait, and gives a fuller feeling in the hand.
