Worth going SB from q6600?

LOL :D

I used to overclock a fair bit. Had an E8400 at 4Ghz for a while and the Q9550 in my second machine sits at 3.4Ghz at stock volts without any problems.

Just don't see the point in overclocking for the sake of it really. If it gives you a useful performance boost, as the above two did, then great, but the i5-2500K is such a beast to start with I don't see the point yet.

Got married going well, then you made the mistake of having a kid.

^^^ well, being a family forum I shall just say - You know what they say stops after being married a while, especially after having a kid.

I have been revising too long...I think I need to go out and experiance the real world again!

have just (2 hours ago) made the transition from q6600 to sandy 2500k, havent really done any gaming yet as im still getting drivers up to date, but I did play a few rounds of BC2, and while my average framerates havent improved massively, minimum framerate has near enough tripled! the game is so much smoother now, even under heavy fire, I love it, cant wait to play more games with it.

on the subject of ePeen,
SuperPiMod: q6600 = 17.4s (3.2ghz, mem 980c5), 2500k =10.56s (stock 3.3, mem 1333 c9), thats gotta be the 'e' equivilent of about 3" overnight right?

I just tried my 6970's in my brothers pc i7-920 at 4.2 ghz and all i can say is Holy christ

It was like the cards got a massive boot up the ass, heaven on default settings hitting over 100fps, blackops at 5760x1080 maxed settings with 4xaa literally bolted to 91fps the vast majority of the time. Im really suprised to say the least, this i7 really unleashed these cards with a vengeance.

Definately now considering sb, just dloading bc2 to test out how much of an improvement that shows on i7. :)

Ordered my new setup at 2:30 this morning.

4 gigs of geil ram
2600k
Asus deluxe mobo

For some reason though it's still saying printed in our warehouse.

Not worth it at all look at the pc line up for the next year.

I highly doubt that diablo 3 and witcher II are going to require much over a dual core let alone quad, rest of the games worth getting will be console ports.

Nah you would be going from a good quad to a much better quad its not worth it overall, the only quads worth upgrading from are maybe the original phenoms... apart from that quad owners should just sit it out until 6-8 core cpu's show up, they will be a worthwhile upgrade IMO.

I upgraded from a Q6600 at 3.5Ghz and found it has made a substantial difference to my gaming experience. Minimum and average framerates have been noticeably boosted and the all round feeling of smoothness is much improved. Whether it's worth £400+ is up to you but you could always sell your old bits to claw back some of the cost. Personally I'm very happy I made the jump.

Being as most of the good games come out around Xmas time, and the only game really worth investing in new hardware for will be Crysis 2 between now and then, I can't personally see myself making the jump till the Autumn time.

I'm making the change in the next couple of months but mainly as I want to replace everything and build my own rig. Just got the upgrade itch and fancy a nice project!

Can always upgrade later if something better comes out though I tend to keep my machines for at least 2 years.

made me lol :D

i encode avchd blu rays.

i was using an intel q6600 at 3.2ghz to do my encodes.
encode times with that were 15-20 hours ( i know i use insane settings)

intel 2600k stock speeds, encode time now under 6 hours (would be more like 4 if my encoder used more than 30% cpu first pass)

so was well worth it for me.

at 4.4ghz its whole new world, its like encoding xvids again lol

I'm in the same dilemma, I feel compelled to drop holiday amounts of money to upgrade to a platform for no other reason than I want to:)

From what i've seen it will unleash my GPU a bit more and make games generally smoother.

Also can't go SLI with current setup
