I am enjoying playing poker on facebook. I fancy playing with real money and able to cash to my bank whenever i want to say if i double 5 to 10 quid i wana cash it.

Is it worth doing if so should i? I peeked in the poker thread here and seems really complicated with the lingo and poker talk. I just know the hands basically tho i found in facebook poker there was somit new i havent seen before, kicker cards like it saying K kicker after the winning hands result is shown. Duno about that or what its for really.

I just wana play with pennies for now, say stick a quid in and see how i go if i make a quid more ill cash out the winning and put back in a quid for later play.

Can i get by by playing this way by just knowing what wins usually and just play by ear kinda thing?

Anyone know of a site that would suit me? Thats trusted and doesnt have "must have 50 quid before cash out" or some rubbish like that.

Cheers.

Sign up for Pokerstars or FullTilt Poker and play with the play money until you grasp the concepts properly. A kicker is for when you both say have a pair of thens but you have Ace-Ten and they have King-Ten. Provided no other pairs and to save complications we will say that you win as you have a higher "kicker" which is your Ace where he has a King.

Definately dont deposit until you know how to play and know the lingo a bit and also look into "Bankroll Management"

If i read you right the kicker is erm on the table is just a pair and me and the other player doesn't have anything but i have an ace and he has a queen. I would win due to the ace, but isn't that more or less just saying i won for high card? Or is it different?

Bankroll management?

How to learn the lingo?

kinda, but you could both have a pair eg.:

You: Jack-10
Them: Jack-9

Board A-7-3-J-K

Both have a pair of Jacks but you have a better kicker. Poker is basically the best hand you can make with ANY 5 cards. Thats way I read it anyways.

But...

If it was:

You: Jack-3
Them: Jack-2

Board 5-7-8-J-K

Then it would be a split pot, because the top 5 cards don't include the 'kicker'.

That's how I play anyway...

Corretomundo!

As for high card, I only use that term if nobody has any kind of hand after the cards are on the table.

Bankroll management?

How to learn the lingo?

Bankroll management is the concept of managing the money you use for poker. Even a winning player will have winning and losing streaks. You should manage your money so that you can ride out the troughs. Good bankroll management determines what levels you should be playing at. For example if you put your last $100 into an account to play then don't sit down at the 1$/2$ cash tables. Play at 0.05/0.10 until you have built up $1000 and then play at 0.25/0.50, then build it up before moving up levels again etc. With only $100 behind you, you only need one 'bad' beat (means getting unlucky) with an all-in and you've lost everything.

Best place to learn the lingo is to buy a good book I think. You'll find it all on-line but you can get some good fundamental skills and learn the terms from a decent tome.

When people play for free or for little money (pennies) they tend to play every hand and bet until the last card is drawn. Not really like real tournament poker or higher stakes.

I'd recommend some $2-5 tournaments, if you take your time each game will last 30-60mins and you will learn a lot faster for not too much money. (You may even win some!)

On (free) Facebook poker a lot of players have the 'all in with an ace' approach, and call bad pot odds up to the river as Showboat implied. Playing for real money is a very different game, but as you have a grasp of the game start with small stakes - you'll find it very different.

Whilst play money games are full of allin players and does not really teach you how to play sucessfully, they do help you learn the basics of the game. If you have never played much poker before it does teach you the value of starting hands and also gives you the basis for learn pot odds.

Play money tournies after the first 15 minutes, where people just try to double up all the time, can be a good way to start to learn the game. Just don't bluff too often as people will call anything.

Then move to $1-$2 double up tournies and learn the value of aggressive play. These are great 30 minutes of fun and you can learn to watch other player styles.

There are plenty of tip sites out there detailing starting hand odds, but the main bit of advice I can give you is learn to play aggressively. Try different styles in tournies to see what suits you best, but aggressive play is the key to winning shorter tournaments. I don't mean raise every hand, but if you want to play a hand then raise rather than call.

It can last for 30mins because it's real money! People actually fold when they see their cards are 7 2, unlike play money and facebook, where they go all in or call down to the last card only to land 7 on the turn and 7 on the river and take the guy who had two aces to the cleaners.......

Playing with fake money is a waste of time and would give you a false sense of how good you may be!

correct real money is different unless you play the 1c tables where it's as good as play money and people will bring 400 quid to a penny table just to be a prat and double up on every bet.

Nothing empties a table faster and it's quite annoying...

If you use stanjames or even PKR you can watch the highrollers play which can be good fun for a while.

Most people will fold constantly unless they have a good hand then it's all about knowing if your opponent has a better hand. Unfortunately you can't see their face which makes online poker a much tougher game IMHO

This. Facebook poker means jack: it's misleading, the hands are played by people playing a pc game and the overall effect is unrealistic, people play anything and don't really care.

Play irl for the desired low stakes or find a regular table and then you can guage it better. Or, sign up to one of the large online poker houses and play free for an hour or two to see how the software works. Deposit a small amount of money when you get the hang of it and play small stakes.

And then see what happens :)

but even 1c/2c tables are as much of a waste of time though.

The top table players betting 50/100 every 5 mins think nothing of playing the penny games the same as free.

I have a friend who plays online poker (can't recall the site). He says he can make a reliable £15-20 per hour doing it but that it's utterly, utterly tedious. Basically he looks around a few of the tables to see what the players are doing and then plays it totally by the odds.

He knows what he's doing and has an eye for these things, so can always turn a modest profit on the low-level tables. Not meaning to be rude, but to the OP: you don't seem to have the knowledge required about the game at the moment to be successful at it. As mentioned previously, there's lots of places you can do reading and research on how to improve.

Generally sound advice here.
Do some reading up before hand, even if it is just an online guide.
Don't take play money poker results as an indication of your ability, ESPECIALLY crap like Facebook poker.
Same goes for micro stakes real money poker.

I don't recall any good sites where you aren't limited to the amount you must have before you can withdraw. Sames goes for depositing.
Unless you're really strapped for cash or have poor discipline/bankroll management, i don't see why you shouldn't deposit the $50 minimum (or whatever the amount is) that's required.
If you do decide to do this, remember BANKROLL MANAGEMENT!

As for sites.. i'd probably recommend PartyPoker for now.

You can usually come accross some good offers if you deposit say $30 you'll get a bonus, i know fulltilt usually do one where they will either pay you a slow bonus or will match your deposit.

If you want to play small then id suggest $0.01/$0.02 blinds on microstakes, then build yourself up.

I only play if i have a high pair, or anything that could point towards a hidden straight or flush., bid low and keep people guessing...dont go all in on the flop like most tards do in pokerstars.

Last night on a $0.05/$0.10 7 guys went all in at the flop, in the end they were blind betting on things like Q 8 , 6 6.... guy won with a full house and cleared up with $39

If you play sensibly you will win more than you lose.
