Worth the change from RAID0 VelociRaptor's to an SSD?

I went from Raid-0'd 300GB Raptors to a OCZ Vertex 2 120GB and now im using a 256GB Samsung 830 and on both upgrades I seen very noticeable improvements in boot time and application/game/editing speeds. I am VERY impressed with the Samsung SSD, after 5 months use I still hit 500 MB/s random read and 400 MB/s random write :D

So pay the same price for half the speed? How do you justify that? :o

Sadly if I was going to do this I'd need to sell the Veloc's to fund it, not that that's a problem really, I'd rather have everything the fastest possible place anyway, I store all my documents and whatnot on my server which has 8TB :)

A single Samsung is around 120 quid, no hassle of raid, faster boot up as no post delays, less power draw, reduced likelihood of failures, less hassle with trim etc etc. raid isn't always better

The speed of them is that much higher as a single drive than your noisy raid disks, that there is just no real point in getting two of them.

Hmm, I see your point, and I realise that going from my current speed to 500 or 1,000mbps is going to feel amazing regardless, but I'm fairly competent with RAID (He says now...) and so don't see why I wouldn't go for the double speed option?

RAID0 can also cause garbage collection issues (i.e. TRIM), so may degrade over time in ways that are much less likely with a single SSD. I just don't see the long-term benefit of RAID0 on SSDs.

(just upgraded my laptop from Vertex2 to Vertex4)

I admit the risk is doubled, though it's not the biggest of concerns for me with not really storing anything important on the drive(s). And yeah the garbage collection could be another issue.

I'm just finding it hard to look at for example, the OCZ 240GB Agility 3, and then the 2 x OCZ 120GB Agility 3 RAID pack for £8 more, and thinking that for an extra £8 I can double my speed.

I've been running 2 x 150GB VelociRaptors in RAID 0 for many years now in my primary PC. They are good and offer plenty space for an OS volume.

I have also been running a 60GB Agility 3 SSD in my HTPC for over a year now and the difference in performance (responsiveness of windows/applications especially) is like night and day. I am deffo getting an SSD the next time I upgrade my primary PC but doubt I'll RAID0 again.

I'm not bothered about the risk associated with RAID0 as I never put anything on a RAID0 volume which can't be replaced but due to my primary storage going back into my main PC (unhappy with OTS NAS performance) I want as many free SATA ports on the Intel RAID controller as possible and given the great performance a single SSD offers, RAID0 isn't as desirable anymore.

I won't be touching OCZ SSDs ever again though. The Agility 3 was shockingly unreliable. That was my first (and likely last) OCZ product.
