Worth upgrading from a Dell 2407?

Hi guys,

I have a 2407 which I've had for years and is still going very strong. I wanted to know if it is worth upgrading and would I see a big difference considering my current panel is nearly 5 years' old. Would a cheap 24" be better than a 2407 considering how old the Dell is?

The 2407 is still a very nice monitor. S-PVA panel and loads of connections.

To get something close to the quality of the Dell you would need to go for this VA panel BenQ, and even then this monior is 16:9 and 1920x1080 res - so not quite as big as your 2407.

If you want to upgrade, then I would suggest having a look at the new 27in 2560x1440 Hazro IPS monitors. The cheapest one (the HZ27WC) is expected to be around £400 and it should arrive on OCUK in the next week or so.

I've got a U2410 next to a 2407 (both calibrated) and actually I think I slightly perfer the 2407 as it's got slightly better blacks, no IPS glow and shows better colour during warm up. The U2410 is a bit sharper though and has better colours once warmed up (I only use sRGB colour mode).

So given the U2410 is considered very good, I would say the 2407 is still a fine monitor unless you're looking for lower latency, 120Hz etc

No, to be quite honest. Unless you wanted to sell it whilst it's still worth something and get a U2410, but don't expect a step up in image quality. As above I actually prefer the look of a good VA panel. You'd still probably end up spending a good couple of hundred doing the switch too!

I have 3 x 2407 (A04) and have often wondered if they were still considered a "good monitor".

I'd upgrade "good" to "excellent" as long as lag and colour gamut aren't an issue. If I could buy a new 2407 I would - there just aren't that many good 1920x1200 VA LCDs these days!

The only panels that I've seen that look better are IPS with an A-TW polarizer but they are costly. My current favourite would be an HP2475 if only the sRGB mode worked!
