Worth upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista?

Let's be brutally honest here.

For most people, Windows is too technical a lot of the time. Mac owners don't even have to download drivers...

And you honestly want to say that Linux is a rival to Windows? Can you imagine what your average PC user running Linux would look like?

It wouldn't be pretty.

Nor do Linux owners most of the time. ( Depending on the version of Linux. )

I honestly want to say Linux is a rival to Windows?

Actually yes. I would. As will far more people than you would think.

Can I imagine your average Pc user running Linux ?

Erm, I see the average PC user on Window EVERY DAY mate. Its pathetic.

When someone gets on a PC, no matter whether its windows, Linux, or MacOS, they are total beginners and have to start from scratch.

Also Given the fact that Apple's OSX IS linux, then what you are saying is completely wrong.

Mac owners dont need to install drivers?

No, Mac, Windows and Linux do have many many drivers built into the OS, there are also some devices that are not. In all 3 cases you will get times when you have to download drivers.

I recover and repair PCs every day and many PCs simply dont have the Windows Licence anymore, and these PCs I install Linux onto. I use Ubuntu mostly, but sometimes MiNT because in almost every case, I do not need to do a thing more.

I have given these PCs to many many many people and local youth clubs and groups and charities, and only a few I have had to sort out and this is only because of a flaw in the PC and NEVER because of the O/S itself.

Linux has come a long long way, and to be honest with you, if it was not for the fact that a few games I have, I have not got workign under WINE, Id ditch windows in a second.

Its awful compared to Linux.

Are you serious?

Where is the Emoticon for slapping someones face?

If I find one, I hope its gox TUX on it.

what do you mean by mocking me here? I do not think it is stupid to wish for serios competition to microsoft? Having only one real choice is boring. Imagine if you had to have the same meal every day and it was bland, and you only ever saw the one same person and they were bland, and your house was bland and you were powerless to change it because every house is the same.

Choice is good. As is competition. To suggest I am being thick by saying so is well....

bland.

If linux were a true competitor to windows then it would gain a stronger foothold. I say linux to most anyone I happen across and they wont have a clue what I am talking about. This is not down to ignorance. This is surely down to it not have any realy imapct. Now firefox you could argue started as being what linux is to windows. But most people will know what firefox is even if they do not use it. That is because firefox and the like were real competition for internet explorer.

And for those would be billionares out there. IE's downfull was Microsofts over-confidence that no one could possibly hurt them.

We have good alternatives to internet explorer. We have some alternatives to office. We have alternatives to MSN. All we need is an alternative to Windows and we can defeat microsoft.

I never once suggested that you are thick.

BUT...

You say about "Apple developing an OS to run on Windows."

Can you not see the idiocy in that one ?

Besides...

There already IS serious competition to Windows, It comes in the form of a Penguin.

I do not see any idiocy in apple allowing thier OS to run on PC's. But I have never used an apple OS. I cant help but think thier obsession with keeping the price of thier hardware beyond the reach of the majority is bad for business. Infact untill the ipod then iphone they seemed to be heading for the gutter.

Most people can not affor computers that cost in excess of £1k. surely better to sell a million OS at £30 each than 100 systems at £1k each?

and were penguin a competetor I would have heard of it as I frequent such forums as this. The fact I never heard of it until you mentioned it just now is an indecation that it lacks the grunt to spread like firefox did. If something is good and better value than the competition then it will grow though word of mouth.

Apple O/S on a PC is NOT what you said... You said about installing a Mac OS on WINDOWS.

Thats what I was pointing to!

But that said, Mac OS CAN be made to run on PCs... Given that Apple Hardware is now Intel based and in many ways is a PC.

As for Penguin, you clearly have not understood that at all have you?

I was referring to Linux. The Linux penguin.

Well I meant installing mac os on windows based pcs something apple had led me to belive one could not do. I was aware that apples are now intel based. As for the linux penguin I am not familiar with linux. I was not being daft, I am just a bit igorant to it all as are most people. The only reason i have heard of linux is because I am intersted enough in computers to have come across that info. I would imagine for the majority of joe and jane publics out there they ignorant to the existence of linux. I think the point I was making was that were there an os such as linux that was a serios competetor to windows then it would grow. The fact it is not leads me to wonder why no one can get a linux os to be good enough for word to spread to people.

I also wonder if it is not in resellers intersts to adopt linux as thier default in order to keep thier costs down. Though I did see a show about microsoft bullying companies to force thier os onto them.

Erm, I dont want you to think that I am being too strong here, but as you asy, you have not heard of linux and you also then say that there is no competition to Windows.

But, Linux has already taken over Windows as the O/S of choice for Servers, it is alos growning all the time.

The only problem that Linux has, is that when you buy a new PC, it comes with Windows, and because of this, pretty much everyone is happy with that.

However, more and more people are trying out Linux and more and more people are happy to move over to Linux.

Linux is also gaining ground in developing countries due to the fact that it can be legally obtained for free.

It is also gaining very strong ground and overtaking Windows in the office and in schools and colledges, again, this is down to the costs.

So, to say what you have said about linux is very laughable especially when you also admit that you yourself have never heard of it.

Anyway, the bottom line is that Linux is much more common than you know, and its growing every day.

Some people say that its note quite ready for the deaktop, but this is very debateable as there is nothing that Windows can do, that Linux cannot. Linux does it quicker and better in many cases.

Oh, and just for you to note, most animated movies are now made on Linux machines... Incredibles, Shrek etc, are Linux

Check it out. The only reason why I still have Windows is because I play a lot of games that are not working under Linux... The moment they are... Windows is gone!

Yes, its worth the money to buy it. It just works, if your going to spend hundreds on a CPU and ram that works well. Then 3/4 of a hundred on software that works well is worth it.

Going from Vista with the latest service pack to Win7 is not worth spending money on inless you are also doing something like going from 32bit to 64bit and you have >4GB of ram.
In pretty much any application Win7 is within 1 or 2% of the speed of Vista (with the latest updates).

I have Vista Ultimate 32 running on a C2D E6400 with 2Gb and an ATi X1950 and Win7 HP 64 running on an i7 920 with 6Gb and an ATi 5850 - both machines had a clean install within the last 5 months and immediately applied all available service packs/updates. As far as the desktop is concerned they are both as speedy as each other, or at best barely conceivable differences. Games obviously run better with the i7 but that's a no-brainer.

Instead of going for Win7 consider an SSD for an OS driver instead?

Linux is great but it really isn't a desktop OS for the average Joe. I have Ubuntu on this PC but I have an ATi graphics card and the support for that and my XFi sound card is just dire. In a year I haven't been able to get my microphone working and games are just miles behind. If you come across much of a problem then you have to resort to arcane commandline to fix it, which is great if you want to know how the OS and your PC are working, but crap if you just want to use it. To be fair the MS, they have that side of things sorted - if you think Windows is complex than Linux is not an option for you.

Not worth spending your money,I'll jump on the Linux bandwagon and say, your better off using Linux Mint 10 if your not a gamer.:p

Vista is seriously pants, i wouldn't use it if you paid me to do so!

One thing that used to drive me round the bend about Vista was the god-awful windows explorer which is full of bugs, slow to copy files and painful to use.

Windows 7 explorer is superb, quick easy and pleasure to use - Love the Library and the Favourites thing on the sidebar. And simple things like a button for 'New Folder' or 'Open with' depending on what you click on.

£75.... Is that for the OEM version? Pointless waste of money OEM!

Got me 7 Ultimate Retail for 30 squids :p

Was the cheapo Ultimate for a special category of user? As can't believe you can still buy it for that price, unless it's a misprice or forgery. But would love to know where if neither is case the.

I'm also on Vista, due to the updates issue I can't install sp2 and its got to the point where I've had to turn updates off, otherwise I get the reboot loop.

Seriously, would getting win 7 be worthwhile? it would be nice to actually have a nice fully updated safe PC.

The Vista updates issue was fixed 2 years ago
If you still have some issues, then thats your PC not the updates.

Have you tried simply downloading the entire SP1 & SP2 and installing those?

I had plenty of hiccups when I first went to Vista, and I kept going back to XP64 but really. I have not come across a single issue recently in Vista on any PC.

Only hangup I do have, is that I dont have a SP2 Disk, and so I have to install that manually after the install, which means that installing Windows takes much much longer than Id like it to.

But its been easily over a year since I have seen any PC with any version of Vista give me any issues what-so-ever, and I have seen hundreds and hundreds.
