I currently have an X850XT and its starting to struggle a fair bit playing COD4 etc at higher res's.

I have been offered a 7900GS OC 256MB for £20, is it worth the upgrade or should I just save the cash and get something better?

I tried looking for reviews on the OC edition but can't seem to find any useful ones!

:)

It won't really be all that great tbf, the oc version won't be vastly different from the normal one, 5% > MAX.

£50 would get you a nice X1900 XT 512mb from places second hand.

Then you'd see a big improvement coming from a x850.

Its not a bad deal but you could do a lot better, if your hard up go for it
If not add another £30 and get something better.

Cool, thanks :) Just seemd a bit cheap at £20 and wondered if it was a bargain- but obviously not. Will look into the 2nd hand market for a X1900 series card.

Not particlarly desperate for a new card, so I can wait for a good deal I guess! :)

Actually for the price is itsn't bad at all sorry just googled it and they appear to overclock pretty well.

Sorry they are better than i thought, so actually assuming it will Oc a little yeah go for it.

I probably would now looking at the reviews i've just read.

Becareful though the have a tendency to die early !

I would say its a bargain for £20 :) (6600gt pcie would got for that on MM)

As said tho it will depend how well it overclocks

My mate has a 7900gs oc which runs at 550/1500 which is on par with a 7900GT.

Not sure if it will give you the extra your looking for though in cod4 :(
Got a 7950GT running at above gtx speeds and its just not enough. 8 series card really needed to play cod4 well with eye candy on.

Def go for it though and have fun overclocking it :)

Get it!

I went from an overclocked x850xt to a 7800gt 256mb and saw a near doubling of perfomance. I'd imagine you'd see the same or better.

Also, £20 is a steal... they normally go for around £40-£50 so jump on it! :)

Hope you get it and enjoy it if you do! :D

Well, I ended up getting it and have been playing about on RivaTuner :D

Think I've unlocked the pipelines so its running 24 / 8 rather than 20 / 7 and overclocked to 590/710 from 540/660.

Any more suggestions? :)

Hate to say it, :p

Benchmark it to see how the performance is !

How did you unlock the extra pipelines? I have a 7900GS and it really struggles in most games, I could really do with a bit of a boost until I buy my new rig...

Actually, scratch that, I don't think the unlock succeeded :( still stuck on 20 / 7

You can try unlocking using RivaTuner but it will only work if the pipes haven't been hard cut.

The reason I tried mine is because BFG were known to be using software crippled GT GPUs in their GS's and GS OC's and you could unlock the extra pipes if that was the case.

I have managed to push the overclock up a bit further though and it seems stable in games, will benchmark later.

well you should get a good performance boost from a x850XT i was using one after my 7900GT died and they are so much slower lol

Oh, I see. Well my GS is EVGA so I guess that idea is out the window. Tbh, I'm really sick of the 7900 atm... it'll run CoD4 at 12X9 with Textures full but everything else off with ok frame rates of around 60 on average but massively dropping to low 20s on occasions. I clocked the core at 550 and the memory at 1500, but later heard about the failure rate of 7900s so eased the clocks off back to near stock values.
