Would a XFX 8800GT XXX be better than my 7950GT XXX?

Was just wondering if a XFX 8800GT XXX edition would give any improvement over my current XFX 7950GT XXX edition? The 7950 is the 512mb version and I was looking at the 256mb version of the 8800. My max monitor res is only 1280x1024 so higher res gaming is not important here.

Current cpu is AMD 4200 Dual Core. Running 2gb ram in a Gigabyte GA-M61VME-S2 board.

Perhaps an upgrade to dual core would be more cost effective?

Would appreciate opinions.

You would definitely see a improvement, but at 1280x1024 even a 8800gt would do just fine. You would probably be better in upgrading your CPU.

TheMagic1an speaks the truth! ^ ^ ^

A 9800GTX should be over double the performance of the 7950.

I would advise you either wait for the new generation of cards that are due or get either an 8800GT (nice and cheap £113ish) or 8800GTS (£150) which is nearly identical to the GTX but a good deal cheaper.

I can get a XFX 9800GT xxx edition which has already been overclocked by XFX for £69 which is what made me think about replacing my current 7950. So do reckon that would be a good upgrade at that price ?

You'll regret getting the 256mb GT, even at 1280x1024 your going to have to start dropping from native res, turning down details, and not use AA, 512mb's the minimum these days.:)

That was a sneaky edit by SY85 there, didn't see he'd added the fact it was a 256mb for sure:D

Think i'd leave it tbh.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Yeah this is the thing. It's the 256mb version and yes it is brand new retail. It's what they call the 'Alpha Dog Edition' Can't say where from but I'm sure you can find it easy enough ;)

Core is clocked to 650Mhz and memory is 1.6Ghz

I was just trying to get an idea as to what scale of improvement it would be over my current 7950GT? i.e is it value for money at £69 and worth spending on at the moment?

It would still be a good upgrade over the 7950, however, the 256MB is a very limiting factor with modern games and as such I couldn't reccomend buying it.

As others have said, stretch to the 512MB version if you can you won't regret it.

If that really is just to much for you you could look at the 9600GT 512MB, they can be had ~£90.
