i need a (cheap, second hand?) graphics card, but would there be any compatibility issue with my system, if i used a radeon card?

someone told me i would have to stick to nvidia because of the on board nvidia chipset, n force 4 and athlon cpu etc??

also what if i was to fit two cards later on, in sli mode?

pc spec:
asus a8n-sli deluxe, n force 4 mobo, hec 550w psu, 4gb ddr ram (pc 3200, 400mhz)
athlon 64 x2 4800+ dual core processor, 300gb hard drive, windows xp sp3
256mb nvidia geforce 7800gtx- not operating anymore!

Rubbish. It will take any nv or ati card as long as it's pci-e. It's worth noting though as it's not pci-e 2.0 you might have problems running few pci-e 2.0 cards even though it's supposed to be backwards compatible. For sli support you will need 2 nv cards of the same range.

Yea. It will take either AMD/ATI or Nvidia card.

Also, forget about SLI...you system won't be able to keep up with even 9800GT SLI anyway; the SLI your system offer is more toward cards of the same generation, which is the Geforce 6 or 7 cards...whereas the Geforce 8 or 9 cards literally at least doubled in speed comparing to Geforce 7.

Just get a single (2nd hand) 8800GT/9800GT/HD4850 and you'd be sorted. I wouldn't really take my chance with cards such as GTX260 or HD4870 with that PSU, and your system is clearly quite old, and your CPU would be somewhat a limitation for them anyway.

Just curious...are you going to upgrade the rest of your system anytime soon, and also what res you are gaming at, and would you be upgrading your monitor in the near future?

haha. maybe i should hit them with my busted graphics card, thatll kill two birds with one stone! Lol

your right my pc is about 5 years old. ive been struggling to decide if i should get a good 'up to date' card or just a cheap second hand older one to get my system working again but ive been persuaded that a good second hand card is the sensible move at the moment, so im looking for maybe a 9800 gt for a bargain price!

ive realised through reading the forums here, that my pc is more out of date than i thought and that the best option is to build a new system and try and sell off my current components, but ill need to leave that to next year some time.
ive avoided doing a self build because i thought it was too complicated but i guess its not that difficult, as everyone seems to be doing it (seen videos on you tube about it and read up on it etc)

ill probably keep my monitor ( 19" viewsonic vx 924 max res i think is 1280x 1040) for a while to save on new purchases when i do upgrade, im reasonably satisfied with it but that may change with a new system?? will decide at the time.

great advice guys thank you

yeah i had problems with my nforce 400 board i could never get my old 5770 to work on it full stop even tho it was supposed to be backwards compatible in the end i bought my rig in sig

Silver, I built an almost identical system to yours about five years ago - how gutting that it was the dog's kahunas back then, and now is all but obsolete!

Anyway - I had two XFX pre-overlocked 7800GTXs in SLi - one died a couple of years ago, the other is still fine. It's now in a half-cannibalised system, doing nothing - if you need a straight replacement for cheap, PM me.

(Erm, I'm not qualified for MM yet - if my post breaches any kind of rule, please feel free to delete, mods.)

hi (ST)Pohaku
thanks, but i got a 8800 gts for a good price from ebay earlier.
appreciate the offer anyway
i know what you mean about the pc lifespan, seems to take about 10 minutes for a system to get out of date!!
