Because people like to see big numbers on spec sheets and reviews. Bigger wins in the bragging rights competition.How do they get away with putting 100 watts per channel etc when these amps clearly don't have that much. The old Technics amp is 30 watts or something, later I will prove how much better it is.
It's nothing new though, is it. They did it with stack systems, ghetto blasters, and now micro systems and home cinema all-in-one kits. There was a great term coined to describe this phenomena - Magic Watts.
Something draws 150-200 Watts from the wall socket, yet can miraculously generate 1000 Watts across 6 speakers. Yeah, right lol Only if you drive one speaker at a certain frequency for a fraction of a second.
