DDR3-1066 - $226 (CL7, OCZ Gold)
DDR2-800 - $38 (CL5, Aeneon)

Cheapest ddr2 and ddr3 modules from ThG x38 topic.

"ethan" makes a good point later in this about mobo compatibilty, does your current board even support DDR3?

No way. DDR3 won't be cheap until the OEMs start using it. Heck, DDR2 didn't get cheap until AMD switched to it years after its debut and even then it took a few months for prices to level-off. I don't think it'll take quite so long with DDR3 because it's already outperforming DDR2 but it will take a while.

I agree Billy it will take some time to catch on, the good thing with DDR2 is the price drop. The market for DDR3 just gets pushed a little further away in my opinion

You wont need DDR3 untill you can overclock your CPU's to such high speeds that the FBS are realy needed or reacherble. And besides lets be honest guys i know we are all speed freeks but the difference between 800mhz and 1500mhz is what in game? A few extra fps that you dont need? The difference in cost is simply not worth it.

Infact i bet 4gb of 600mhz ram and you wont notice any difference while playing if it was 1000mhz as long as you dont have any other limiting factors.

Why on earth would anyone buy DDR3 at this point in time weather you have the money or not.

Look its DDR3 is must instantly be better than DDR2 becuase its DDR3.:p

Not a wise investment at all. DDR2 can provide all the bandwidth Core Duo/Quad needs currently and is outrageously cheap. £40 for 2GBs is the cheapest RAM has ever been. The most RAM a gamer could need is 4GBs at the moment, costing £80, a few years ago when 1GB and 2GB were the largest quantities we were paying upto £200 for a set.

Can't see the market for it at the moment except for mega loaded people, you know, the ones who are running Quad Extremes with 8800u-SLI.

I will probably go DDR3 for my next major upgrade in 6 months to a year from now. But right now its way to expensive to be worth it.

No thanking you as it would require a mobo upgrade on top of the already ridiculous price of the ddr3
