Would you expect a garage to warn/tell you of an upcoming service?

In reality you can often pull a DPF out and clean it out, leaving it soaking overnight in a light solvent and attack it the next day with a air-tap or pressure washer.

This.

Doesnt always work, but just done this on my old 530d which my mate owns now and its back to full health

On my Scudo's the DPF is a service item at 120k(listed on the schedule), nowhere near £1250 though, only £300 at the dealer.

I think this is where we need to be with DPF's, a sub £500 part that needs doing at a sensible interval. That way it would become acceptable to the general public, just as a cambelt replacement is now.

I think back to when catalytic converters first came out (although I was just a boy back then!) there was lots of hoo har about these new fangled expensive parts that will fail and write off older cars but the prices have dropped and the durability improved.

Yes, I take all your points of view and unfortunately my lifestyle and work changed last year which meant I no longer had to/could drive long distances in it.

Naively, I didn't realise it had a DPF filter initially, till the EOLYS fluid ran out. The Ford Dealer state they need changing at 75k but it still surprises me that they didn't mention it as it was guaranteed work for them and they must see this sort of thing all the time.

Thanks for all the tips on remapping etc. Any idea what this does to the emissions come MOT time and the fuel consumption? Does the car then pour out soot?

if it just traps soot, wouldnt peroxide be a great agent to de-carbon it?

When they clog they can be a nightmare to try and clean. We had an A4 with under 50k on the clock that came in, and got some super dooper super strength stuff off these guys (man in a lorry visits once a month)...

...didn't even touch it after soaking for 48 hours. Chances are if you can shift a bit of it, it won't be enough for it to allow to regen anyway...

Stupid bleedin' idea DPF's!!!
