WPA problem

I can't seem to be able to use a WPA with a laptop, when I try and insert the WPA into the normal windows WPA/WEP window I get a message telling me the length is wrong.

I'm using a Cisco Aironet 340. I have a feeling that they don't suport WPA's. Am I correct? and if so is there a way to update the firmware?

I've got an old 340 my parents use.

Convert the ASCI sting into a hexadecimal string, its a bug with the windows 340 drivers which dont let it send WPA keys correctly.

"The network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 orr 26 hexadecimal characters"

So it's using WEP not WPA then.

Your computer is assuming you're using WEP, rather than WPA. You need to go into your wireless network tab, goto preferred networks and add a new network. There you can select the type of encryption, set it to WPA, enter the SSID etc. etc. then save it.

Sometimes, if you just browse for a wireless network and it's WPA protected, sometimes windows won't realise this and assume it's WEP. I've had this problem a few times, but if you add the entry yourself and select WPA it will work fine.

What's so hard to understand?

WPA-PSK has no length requirements (as long as they're < 64 characters I think) for the key. WEP does. You're being told that the key length is incorrect, therefore WEP.

Shouldn't there be a WPA option?

What's so hard to understand is that I hadn't created the profile for the wireless, just selected to connect to it after it had found it. Then a window came up asking for a network key, I put the WPA in then got that message. I didn't select WEP anywhere.

Looks to me like your adapter doesn't support WPA. In which case you won't be able to connect to an access point which uses WPA. Your only option is to change the encryption used by your AP.
