Has anyone got any advice on this? I have looked at some examples but cannot for the life of me write my own. I am not afraid to speak publicly but everything I seem to write sounds good on paper, but as soon as I read it aloud it sounds too wordy and "written" if that makes any sense
Any help would be appreciated!

Groom's speech is the easy one. Thank the brides parents if they have paid, thank both parents if its shared, thank them for their support if you've paid for it. Say that your wife is the most beautiful person in the room, get that out of the way first, then go on to "my wife and I would like to thank" guaranteed awwwwws.

Don't worry about being funny, over and done in 5 minutes.

Thanks for the advice guys, think I was trying to hard to make some funnies. A draft would be ace dude thanks. smitho3 at gmail dot com.

Cheers :)

Like it. I've got to do 2 speeches later this year as a best man and I've been bricking it, but the tone of that speech has calmed me down and given me something to aim towards. Thank you.

glad you liked it I'll pass the complements along, it's the best speech that I have sat through, nothing too cringe worthy, and nothing that you wouldn't want your family to hear, everyone was laughing

And the worst 5 minutes joke :D

Ok I have written everything apart from the bit about my Mrs, I'm thinking of winging that bit, If i can't think of something wonderful to say on the spot about my beautiful wife then there's something wrong! Could someone give it a quick read for me, I must admit a couple of generic parts I have plagiarised from various sources but a good 90% is original.

I'm a wedding videographer, and from someone who goes to 2+ weddings a month, please, please, PLEASE don't copy and paste age-old jokes from the interwebnets.

As the groom, say what's true to your heart. As the best man, call on past personal experiences. Saying something that literally 100 other people are saying on the same day as you just really doesn't cut the mustard for such an occasion.

Naah no cheesy jokes or re-hashed crap, only bit i really copied was this:

Unfortunately, it’s not been possible to have everyone we love here with us today, but we know they’re here with us in spirit & they’re not only in our thoughts today, but more importantly they’re with us in our hearts.
So, with them in mind, would you please all stand, raise your glasses, & join me in a toast to absent family & friends.
Ladies & Gentlemen, “Absent Family & Friends”

I wanted to put something like that in as I lost someone close to me 2 years ago who will most certainly be on a lot of peoples minds.

My last wedding speech was as best man for Fatboy. Stayed up with him drinking until 2am the night before his wedding and started writing my speech at 10am the next morning. Saves a whole lot of stress :)
