Well I live in Nottingham and this time of year, as anywhere else, if you have your window open at night with a light on then you will get moths coming in. They don't particularly bother me, but then I saw this monster beast of a moth coming right at me, a rat with wings, and I got a bit of a shock. At first I thought it was a bat but no, it's just a big nasty hairy moth.

Can anyone identify it, because I have never before seen a moth half this size in this country...

LOL at the curtain moth pic. That thing looks evil...

As for the size - seems to be almost bang on 3" from wing tip to wing tip in the position it's sitting there. Doesn't sound that big but it's certainly the biggest moth I've ever seen in this country!

ahhh holy hell - the camel spider hath spouted wings!!!! :p

that's one beauty of a moth - we've been getting lots in our office recently but nothing like that
infact could I borrow it? there's a woman in my office who's terrified of even small moths - something like that might actually get her to quit! :D

didnt we get a thread last year about a moth a guy snapped a photo of.

the moth covered an entire brick in the picture.

anyone still got it?

na that wasnt it.

everyone was opting to kill it but the poster didnt have a large enough calibre gun and Feek wasnt close enough :p

That atlas moth is incredible! Dwarfs this little fella...

The close-up of the moth head that ~J~ posted kind of freaks me out... I don't know I always get a shiver down my spine when I see close-ups of insects. Nasty...

but you have to remember that the worst thing a moth is capable of doing to you is eating a hole in your sock and drowning in your tea :) their very simple effective creatures and in a certain way, quite pretty.

Must admit I do like moths, no harm in them, very nicely coloured and not as girly as butterflies.

In fact, think I'll open the door and see who pops in.

Yes, I don't mind them really. I mostly ignore them when they're on their endless missions around the lightbulb, and they do look quite decorative when they're just sitting on the walls.

I just have some odd reaction to close-ups of any insects - harmful or not! I don't know what it is, I think they just trigger some primal instinct that says 'this thing is evil'. Or maybe I'm just a wuss :p
