X-Fi Gamer on Vista.. What is Alchemy?

I just finished building my system and got a Createive X-Fi Gamer card.
Using Vista 32 bit.
I have the latest drivers installed (2.15.0002) and the card works fine.

I however, have never used the card under XP, so i don't know what i'm missing.
I have 2.1 / Sennheiser headphone setup.

I've read about the issue with EAX in Vista, but i've never quite understood if it's been fixed or not, and if i do need to do something special to fix it or not.

I have this Alchemy program that i downloaded off the creative drivers page but i have no idea how it works or if i "need it".

For example, to play Civilization IV with EAX 4 (it supports it in game), do i need to add the game in the Alchemy program?

MS have changed the soundstack in Vista so EAX etc no longer works, Creative made the above app to convert the new format back to a format than the cards can use EAX etc in (In laymans terms), if you want to read more here :

creative really are a bunch of *****. they're trying to sell this to audigy users for $10...... yet you can download a modified version for nothing from a thread in their very own forums.
