Hi,
I have recently put together a new system comprising a cheap OEM Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI soundcard. This 'upgrades' from the Audigy 1 in the old system. The drivers were obtained from Creative's webby under "Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Pack 1.04.0079 (62.57 MB) 2-Apr-08"

I tend to need to adjust the bass and treble settings with the headphones and separate soundsystem that are connected to the soundcard - up with the headphones, down when using the soundsystem.

Simply, I am finding that the Bass and Treble Tone Controls are greyed out with the X-Fi. Given the generation gap between the two cards I didn't expect this decrease in "functionality".

Is this as expected, and given that I want to control the bass and treble have I scrimped too much with the OEM X-Fi? The old Audigy even has better gold plated connectors compared to the childish colourful plastic on the X-Fi :(

How do I get my options back?

you wont like this but basically an xtreme audio isnt really an x-fi at all. it has no hardware acceleration, doesnt use the x-fi spu (whatever revision they are using now, i cant remember) and is in fact an audigy se in disguise. http://jimmyauw.com/2007/01/16/x-fi-extreme-audio-audigy-se/

being a rebadged audigy se, its actually a downgrade from your original audigy in every way. in fact you should even really call it an audigy either!

At what point in the range will one actually get an X-Fi chip?

Should I just pick some other manufacturer (Auzentech?) now that Creative has duped me out of the cash. This "OEM X-Fi" card is going out the door asap.
 
the next card up actually - the xtreme gamer - is the cheapest one to go for if you want a real x-fi. if you want to try something different it all depends on how much you want to spend. some of the older auzentech cards can be picked up pretty cheapily, or there is the xonar d2 which is a top card but comes at a price.
