I used to love playing these games, could spend hours going over the missions and re-doing the training. Went through multiple joysticks at the same time.

So i was wondering (with soooo many Star Wars titles out there) wether there was a new version of these fab games that i've missed?

I think the last one was a expansion pack for X-wing Vs Tie Fighter: Balance of Power which came out about in 2000.

Surely this isnt the last offering for Star Wars space battles?

If so, is there any other games out there that focus on fighting like these games rather than trading?

Cheers.

x-wing alliance, altho that was pre 2000 i think so u might already no of it. and the episode one or two game they brough out. Battle for nabo i think its called. Never played this tho as im more of an X-wing kind of guy :D

The Jump To Lightspeed part of Star Wars Galaxies was good, too bad the game as a whole turned into total crud and there's nobody to play with anymore.

So no real update of the X-wing genre for over 6 years.

Quite sad, considering how many Star Wars games they release every week.

Lego Star Wars (played the demo) is fantastic though.

I've got battle for naboo. About 90% of the levels are within the atmosphere rather than space. It sucks.

I never got X-wing Vs Tie Fighter (actually not sure, im really lost on which ones i had), or the Balance of Power expansion, so i might try and find somewhere that sells it.

Any safe ideas? (as in non direct competitors)?

What about X-wing: Alliance?

Is this a newer game?

Yeah, graphics are much better, but i didnt like the story driven side of things
One thing i loved about X-Wing Vs Tie Fighter, is that it was misson based, you just selected which misson you wanna go on, and you can re-fly them if you wanted to.

such a shame that they havent realsed another X-Wing game after that, it was easily the best space flight sim of all time (not including Elite or Frontier!)

X-Wing Alliance is definately worth it, coming from a TIE-Fighter nut like me. It is story based, but once you get past the initial boring first few missions, the Story driven aspect of the game is very very good. It's no means perfect, but it cetrainly has its moments, plus you can create your own scenareos and reply older missions.

Failing that, FreeSpace and especially FreeSpace 2 are amazing games. I'd go for FreeSpace 2, you don't really need FreeSpace to understand what's going on. It's such an atmospheric well made game, and towards the end of it, the plot twists and battles are crazy.

Cheers, will check out FS2.

An alternative is always nice.

(just a shame it wont have the same SW's feel to it, winning combo, the ships, the music etc..)

I'm 90% certain there is an active mod community for X-Wing Alliance, with loads of new ship models and missions etc...

Didn't they also re-release the original Xwing and tiefighter games with the XWA engine? Tie-fighter is possibly the greats game ever....

Edit: try here

nice one cheers.

From memory; do you have to have a joystick for these games to work?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who loved the original X-Wing and TIE Fighter games. :)

I loved TIE Fighter - it just had so much atmosphere to it. You really felt like an Imperial pilot trying to destroy the Rebel Alliance. The shield system and weapons worked so well, it really is surprising that there's never been a decent update.

Imagine what they could do these days on the Xbox 360 or PC. Internet play could be stunning.

You could play with the keys but it was a much better experience with a joystick.

alliance you do need a joystick, i remember getting it in a star wars game pack and not being able to use it for like a year or more cos i didnt have a joy stick.

it is an awesome game :) its semi-story driven-ish lol as DaveyD said, after you get pas tthe first few "family" missions it does turn into a whole different game almost. mainly flying missions for the alliance etc but occasionally goin off to help out on some family missions. their always a welcome change i found :)

the scenario editor is great too. create custom scenario's using pretty much what ever ship you want thats in the game to use, good stuff :)

infact, i think me and DaveyD were gonna attempt a multiplayer game at one point lol but never got round to it. multiplayer on any of these star wars games would be great :)

yer u can, the is a sim room on your ship that lets u replay missions and make custom battles, Tie defender here I come :)

edit: oops already said above.

Trouble is finding a desent multiplay game of it, i tried it online a few times and I think it suffered because of the lack of a com system.
Would work better in a clan situation with some team work.

ah TIE fighter, one of the best sims I have ever played.

I didnt like the X-wing game so much (forgot what it was called)

if only they updated TIE-fighter to run on XP and throw in some eye-candy update.

This starshatter game looks interesting. I'm reading forums now but it seems theres is a new version out Q3 2006. It's more an evolution that a new codebase so it should be reasonably stable... excellent mod community also as shown by the star wars mod above

X-Wing Alliance is a great game and I can really recommend it, some great missions and a variety of ships to fly (millennium falcon!) but it’s not really a patch on Tie Fighter, which in my opinion is one of the greatest games ever.

I know there are some update packs available for X-Wing alliance to upgrade the graphics and also some extra mission packs so they might be worth checking out.
