Behind you... Naked!
I have been using a x1600 ( 512MB job ) in one of my PCs and I decided to swap it for a 6600GT.

The thing is, that they are about the same speed, so I checked a few sites and I had some interesting finds...

Many sites say that they are on-par with each other...

Some sites say that the 6600GT is on par with an x800

Now, it does not take a genuis to also come up to the conclusion that this alos means that they must all be about the same speed.

Now, I have also got an x800, as well as a x850 too, and I can clearly see that the x800 and x850 are miles quicker than the 6600GT and the x1600.

So, how the hell can these benchmarks come to the conclusion that both the x1600 and the x800 are about on par with the 6600GT???

Ah, sodding hell... At least the 6600GT is SLI capable as I am getting a second one to have a play, so its not completely wasted money... Hell, Im going to use the x1600 back in the No3 and just shove the 6600 into the Opteron box cos that never gets used these days.

Different benchmarks give different results. Maybe the 6600GT beats the X800 in Doom3/Quake4, as Nvidia loves that engine. Where the ATI cards kill the 6600GT is things like Half Life 2.

The benches I saw had a fairly good selection of apps, yes, I am fully aware of ATI / NVIDIA with OpenGL games such as Doom/Quake, but others like FarCry, FEAR and so on were also in these tests, and When I run some tests, I am shown that the 6600GT as pretty much spot-on the same as the x1600, and the X800 is a good 50%+ faster in all tests I have done.

I think that a more sensible comparison would be to put the numbers together

X1600 = 6600GT

x800 = 6800GT

But the tests that I saw was saying that the X800 is also the same as the 6600GT, but this is seriously NOT the case... In my own PCs the x800 walks all over the 6600GTs all across the board.

My next test however, is to give a head to head of these 2

Gigabyte 6600GT ( PCIE )
XFX 6600GT ( AGP )

The 2 most likely CPUs I will use are the 3200 and the 3500 as they are both Winchester cores, and I will run them both at 2.2

I will then substitute the PCIE with the x800 and then re-run all the tests again.

The thing is, and I dont mean to bring in even older cards, but the Radeon 9800Pro I find is pretty much the same speed as the 6600GT and the X1600.... Marginally slower perhaps, but not enough to write home about, and certainly not enough to waste money on upgrading to one of them thats for sure.

I say this because in AquaMark3, these are the results I have had in the last batch of tests

9800 Pro = 48K ( AGP )
6600GT = 56K ( AGP + PCIE )
x1600 = 56K
x800 = 74k
x850 = 86k

I think it's more to do with the fact that Nvidia can run OpenGL apps better which isn't something to sway your card choice. As OpenGL isn't used anymore with new games (bar Quake4/Doom3 obviously).

you are being a littel vague with models here, FatRakoon. for example, a 6600gt probably Is right on par with an x800xl. the x800xt will be quicker though.

you need to be more specific in what cards you and they are refering to.

Sorry.

Ok, I would myself opt for NVIDIA for the fact that GL support is better in Linux. I know that OGL is no longer supported by Windows, but it is still by Linux.

Ok, my cards...

Ok, AGP are:-
XFX 6600GT ( I need to check whether its 128 or 256 cos I never use that PC )
Radeon 9800 Pro ( Although that was added as a side note )

the rest are PCIE
Gigabyte 6600GT ( 128MB )
Asus x1600Pro ( 512MB Model )
Saphire x800GTO2 ( 256MB )
I got 2 of these and one is firmware flashed to x850
x700LE ( 256MB? ) is a vanilla unknown job that was in the P4 when I got it

This is my understanding.
From slowest to fastest..(similar speed cards in brackets)

X800 (9800XT, X700Pro, X1600Pro)
X800GT* (6600GT, 6800LE, X1600XT, X1650Pro)
X800GTO (6800, X800GTO2 @ stock 12pipes)
X800Pro
X800XL (X850Pro, 6800GT, 6800GS)
X800XT (6800Ultra)
X800XTPE (X850XT, 7600GT, X1650XT)

* note the 256MB versions were clocked quicker than the 128MB versions
Also note sometimes one card will run quicker in certain tests / games & yet slower in others.
