Hi all,

I'm looking for a PCI-E card at around £100-£150 to replace my 9800SE AIW @ 9800Pro.

I want it to be quiet, or at least a card capable of having the Artic Cooler bolted on.

I've been out of touch with graphics cards since mine was the one to buy, and I'm looking for a couple of tips as to which card is best.

I have no real need yet for Dual Link DVI, but it would be nice to have.

I've seen so far:-

Asus ATI Radeon EAX-X1600 XT SILExtreme NT/TVD 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-090-AS)
I know the Asus Brand, and like the idea of the extra features it offers, but don't really want a card with a heatsink that sticks out at the back because I want to put it in an Antec Aria and I'm not sure it'll fit.

HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X1600 XT ICEQ Turbo 256MB DDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (RX1600XT-256ICEQT) (GX-051-HT)
Seems ideal, and slightly faster than the Asus faster going on VPU and RAM speeds, however, I don't know much about HIS. No idea what iTurbo or Avivo does. Any good?

Leadtek GeForce 7600 GT Extreme 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-083-LT)
The fastest card here going on clock speeds. However it would be around £50 more expensive by the time that an artic cooler had been added, if one is available, as I can't see one on OcUK.

So, which of these cards would you choose and why? Which is actually fastest? Would you recommend anything different? Do any of these options have a pipeline trick to increase performance like the 9800 SE did? I assume that all cards here would be quicker than a 9800 Pro, and for comparisons sake, a 6800GS/GT?

Thanks for looking. :)

As far as I know the 7600GS is about on par with the 6600GT. Which would offer you some, but not a massive improvement from a 9800Pro. The 7600GT out performs the X1800XL in some things which is good by anyones standards. Out of the cards you selected above, to me, the 7600GT is the obvious choice.

I can't find the X1800 XL? I've found the X1800 GTO and X1800 XT though. How do these compare to the 7600GT et al?

Ok ok ok..

The 7800GT is faster than the 7600GT. The X1800XL was faster than the X1800GTO.

Cheers, The B-Grade 7800GT has gone now, so that's no longer an issue. I assume it was replaced by the 7900GT?

Did the X1800 XT replace the X1800 XL?

Is the X1800 XT quicker than the 7600GT?

If so, this looks good value @ £170inc VAT and large, presumably quiet HSF:-
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-121-SP)

Thanks for your help, much appreciated. :)

The 7900GT has replaced the 7800GT yes, although you can still get 7800GT's

And no the X1800XT didn't replace the X1800XL, the XT was the very high-end card, the XL the regular one. The X1800XT is hugely faster than a 7600GT, totally different league. Incidentally the 256mb Saphire X1800XT you mention for £170 that OcUK sell is the best performance bargain going right now, it's THE card to get for less than £250, nothing else touches it for that price, not even close :)

Yey \o/ :)

Thanks for that. Do we know how loud it is? The fan from the picture looks similar in size to the Arctic Cooler/HIS Excalibur Silent Coolers.

It looks to be using exactly the same cooler as my own 512mb X1800XT, it's not really very loud unless it spins at full speed, which it never does except when you first power on, then it throttles back and stays relatively quiet, it will speed up when you put it under heavy load, which is basically only gong to be when you're gaming ..but mine has never reached full speed.
