X1800XT 256MB - whats the performance drop compared to the 512MB card? Cant seem to find X1800XT 512's in my price range but dont want to drop too much :)

Depends what res you are going to be using.
They are a few frames faster than the 512MB version below 1280x1024, then the higher the res gets the more of a drop in FPS you see.
I game at 1440x900 and I have absolutely no complaints with my one, it was an excellent upgrade from my X800XL.

Hmmm that res is closer to mine - I know ill see a vast improvement anyway but when splashing out I want to make sure I hit the price/performance sweetspot as best I can and not sure if the extra £40 is worth the cost? I game at 1680x1050

If you game at that res, 512MB for definite. It is about a 10-15fps difference at that kind of res.

Bummer - not what I wanted to hear :( lol :) cheers tho - I was begining to think the bigger card might well be needed

Edit: YAY! found HIS Excalibur x1800XT 512MB NEW for £215 inc postage :D and no - wont be telling anyone just in case it was a mistake - they often let 1 or 2 orders through and correct said mistake but 100's of orders and they all get cancelled :)

I just ordered a Connect 3D 256mb version for £217 but I may well send it back and get the HIS 512mb.

Will the HIS fit the DFI Lanparty mobo as the HIS X850XT didn't due to the ICEQ II cooler, does the X1800XT have the same cooler (site doesn't say, but it looks like one from the picture)

EDIT: No it doesn't look at all like the ICEQII cooler, should fit fine ...

Aye I was a bit worried to start with as going in shuttle but I know that cooler and it actually fits without problem. Does tend to go like a mouse wheel on its side tho (think its balanced for it to be quiestest when "hanging" from the card) so might need a zalman to finish things off :)

Guys, pay attention to the 'thin ice' comment above, continuing to talk about prices elsewhere will end up earning you a short holiday from these boards if you are not careful :)

Best leave the debate there.
