My present rig is an AMD64 3500, 2 gig of ram, and an audigy 2 ZX. I'll be gaming at a maximum of 1024 x 1280, and I'm not sure whether the X1900XT 512 meg will be overkill. People speak very highly about the X1800XT, and bearing in mind I've just moved from a 7800GS AGP I would expect to see improvements anyway.

I'd appreciate people's thoughts on this. Is it worth the extra £50 for the Connect X1900XT?

Thanks

Rob

Do you mean 1280 x 1024 or 1024 x 768? If you mean 1024 x 1280 that is a strange screen shape you got there :p

Anyway, imo, X1800 XT 256MB would be fine at 1280 x 1024 but you'd see more improvement over your GS with a X1900 XT (but mostly in higher resolutions / detail settings), if your planning to keep the card awhile/upgrade the monitor I'd spend the extra :)

Agreed, if max res is going to be 1280 x 1024 go for the X1800XT

wait a while since the x1950's have been released all the older x1800's and x1900's will be dropping in price rapidly
They've already had major price-cuts ahead of the X1950 release, I don't think we're going to see more any time soon. Gibbo said that X1900 stock is actually going to increase in price as they're now being phased-out, and the stock is drying up.

As for the topic: For 1280x1024 go for the X1800XT, it should take most of anything you throw at it. :)

Thanks guys. I've got one eye one a widescreen in the next few months so I may spend the extra. The X1950 is probably a little more than I can spend.

Ok, I give in!!

X1900XT on order. Total cost inc VAT and delivery £209.
Already sold the 7800GS AGP on an auction site for £160 so it only cost me £49 in real terms.

I'm seriously tempted to upgrade my X1800XT to an X1900XT at the This Week Only price.

Really dunno if it will be worth it though, I only game at 1280x1024 as well, but some games like FEAR struggle at times with 2x AA 16x AF

The 7800GS AGP I had was the XFX 256 extreme version, and not the better performing Gainward variants. Can't say it was a huge leap over my old 6800GT, which I still consider the best GPU I've owned.

7800 GS is not a 7900 GT, in the stock form (i.e. not a Gainward go faster version) it isn't really that much faster than a 6800 GT/Ultra. A X1800 XT is a pretty big step up and a X1900 XT a  one :p

I'm hoping to keep the X1900XT for a year at least. I figure that by then we should be seeing reasonable numbers of DX10 games coming on stream. Maybe then I might build a new rig.

Yeah good plan, x1900 will easily last, then you can buy the new faster DX10 card in about a year as theres bound to have been a few DX10 cards been and gone by then, if you have a high end card now G80/R600 is a waste, as your only going to be using em to run DX9 faster than you already are, but that won't matter as your x1900 will be throwing around DX9 games anyway at cracking frame-rates, and you'll be using it for Crysis's DX10 features which probably won't make it look much different than it is in DX9 considering how well it looks in DX9, and the DX10 games aint gona flood out, and the ones that do will only have the odd DX10 feature as they will also run in DX9. :)

Had my x1800 XT 512mb since last November when they came out, and its still throwing games around maxed out, so idont know why ppl say theres no point getting the likes of the x1900/x1950's etc.. now as DX10 cards are due out, i mean if the x1950 can't even last 4 months then theres summit wong there, ppl seem to think that when DX10 cards come out then thats it for your DX9 card, it wont run anything at all, may as well just take em out of your machines and bin em as they are going to be totally useless, but thats so wrong, wait till DX10 comes around, and all the dissapointment starts. :(

Only ppl who are going to benefit from the R600/G80 are those with low end cards.

Thorough read, but a point I agree on. I intened to keep my X1800XT 256MB until the second generation of DX10 cards come out, probably R700 and G90 if the sequence resumes that way.
