According to the official list of games registrable on Steam it does work.
Depends if you get one key for X3 Gold or two keys, one for X3 and one for X3:TC. Only Terran Conflict can be linked to steam, which is maybe why RaMDOM's key didnt work.

What kind of Tech Specs are needed for X3? I was trying to look but sadly at work most things with "Game" in them are blocked so I couldn't find anything.

so what is the deal with the expansion?
Is it a sequel of sorts? does it augment the existing game? is it best that you have completed Reunion? can you transfer stuff from your reunion game over?
What type of game is X3?
Is it like freespace?
a FPS flight/space game?
Its a space flight sim.
You can do whatever you want in the game as you dont have to follow any of the plots.
You can build massive combat fleets and fly any ship in the game, from small scouts to massive destroyers.
But that is only half the game you can also trade with other races and even build your own factories all in the name of galactic domination

For those who missed the deal, X3: Terran Conflict is currently £3.99 at gamersgate, obviously not as good as the impulse deal but for the majority of people X3:TC is all you need and also having X3:Reunion/Gold is a bit redundant.
