X5A Telechips 8902 android tablet?

Thank you for looking into this. I know they had ported the newer gallery to Droid before it had an official update that included it. I'll have to test some .apks out when I finally get my X5A. If you're interested, I can update on the topic then. Thanks again.

Also just found this out

Google has stated that it currently isn't using Android on any tablets, hinting that it will have a tablet-centric OS soon.

Although Gingerbread and Honeycomb have been strongly tipped to be tablet-friendly versions of Android, this is the first time Google has confirmed Froyo isn't a platform for iPad rivals.

While some will point to the Galaxy Tab as the flaw in this statement, the device features all the connectivity of the Galaxy S, making it essentially a larger phone rather than a standalone tablet.

"Android is an open platform. We saw at IFA 2010 all sorts of devices running Android, so it already running on tablets," said Hugo Barra, director of products for mobile at Google.

Android Market not for tablets

"But the way Android Market works is it's not going to be available on devices that don't allow applications to run correctly.

"Which devices do, and which don't will be unit specific, but Froyo is not optimised for use on tablets.

"If you want Android market on that platform, the apps just wouldn't run, [Froyo] is just not designed for that form factor.

"We want to make sure that we're going to create a application distribution mechanism for the Android market, to ensure our users have right experience."

This echoes comments made by Archos to TechRadar at IFA, stating that Google is looking for the 'wow factor' with it's tablet platform, with custom animations and UIs, so it could be that we'll be seeing a whole different breed of Android devices to take on the iPad.

which is why we probably haven't seen any big brand ones yet. And I have been having problems with lots of apps, it's very hit and miss. Kindle app doesn't work, it loads, but you can't do anything in it.

I hope there release a new android soon, as I was hopping this would only need to last till early next year.
It's making the Ipad look better. but I would like flash, or at least a proper love film app, I can watch movies on, as well as a few others.

Yeah, I'm sure you're right. The big guys will hold out for the tablet-geared versions, so I'm hoping this device will hold us over until we see some really nice 10" capacitive tablets from Motorola & others next year. Though with the Galaxy Tab coming at 4x times the price of these lower-end 7" resistive tablets, I fear what the prices are going to be for a real iPad competitor. We might end up buying another clone w/ higher specs then. :)

Any ideas how to reinstall/flash android?
Apparently the "uncalibrated" touchscreen is a bug in the software and a reinstall should sort it out, they will do it. But rather not send it back to them. time and money.

Was it having calibration issues from the start or did it creep up later on? Now you have me worried if it's a common issue.

I've been bookmarking a bunch of sites/links for future reference and this FAQ has a few good links to other threads on recovery & ROMs:

From what I've read, our Telechips-based tablets are hard to officially brick, but it's still intimidating.

slowly getting worse, company says it's a common problem when certain apps are not uninestalled properly.

Which model have you ordered?
Which I knew everything I know now about tablets.
even the new model has g-sensors and a much better touch screen including two point touch.

Odd explanation from them. I don't see how uninstalled apps would relate, but I don't have very high expectations of support from some of these companies. :p

Sadly, I bid on mine on ebay, so I don't even have a certain store site for support and what not, but a listing just like the one I won is here.
The description says X5A and claims to have a mavity sensor & 2-point touch, but I'll believe it when I see. Apparently that'll be good to know if we try flashing it later since the two (w/ or w/o multitouch & g-sensor) don't have compatible roms.

Also bid on ebay.
But through a uk company.

Will see what happens, can always send it back if needed.

Just downloaded hardware info and it says it has a 3way accelarometer in it

any idea how reliable these apps are, if so any idea if installing the 2nd gen version would cause hassle if it isn't.

You're not alone. Short related thread here.

Others noticed the same thing, but I don't recall reading if an update would enable features the information apps claim are there (if they're accurate).

It'll be tempting to test out the 2.2 versions in the works (link), but I'm not counting on Flash working. I believe I've read video doesn't work yet with current versions (assuming Gallery videos/Youtube?), so I'd hold off. Maybe try SkyFire to browse flash videos sites if Flash support never makes it to our tablet.

So, from what I'm reading, you're lucky if the battery last 5-7 hours on "standby." So, if you're out and about for a full day, I'm assuming you'd have to actually shut down and wait for a full boot a time or two to save power when not needed or always have an ac adapter in your bag for a 2nd charge. A bit of a bummer considering the advantage was to be an instant-on device replacing my netbook that'd need to boot first or resume from hibernation. Still a bit more portable and able to work in hand and not on a lap or desk. :)

Bump dug it out again after months of no use, trying to put the froyo rom on, but I can't find a link to clockworkmod anywhere? are they device specific?

So, I asked questions back in October or November of last year (my winning ebay bid ended in October) and I just NOW got the X5A! Almost 5 months. Last time I bid on something from China over $5-$10. I had written off getting it after 2 months and bought a Viewsonic gTablet. It's no Motorola Xoom, but its Tegra 2 chip is about 10x faster than this X5A in benchmarks and I'm hoping it'll get a Honeycomb port being the same CPU as the Xoom. Anywho...

So now, AcidHell, I am looking at the rooting/hacking stuff for the X5A even though I'll most likely sell this now. Mine was advertised as 2GB with a G-sensor (accelerometer), and it ended up being 4GB and does not rotate. I have the Market pre-installed, but any attempt at downloading results in "Download was unsuccessful." Luckily there's some alternatives and I can get .apk files from my Droid & gTablet.

I just downloaded z4root minutes ago and quickly rooted the X5A. The app is supposed to be in the market, but since my market fails to download, I found the .apk here.
The only Froyo ROMs I've read about still have issues, primarily related to video playback. If I read it correctly, Youtube & videos will not play. I'm not sure I would give that up, unless a 3rd party player like RockPlayer can still play video.

I may try the older AsuRom 1.0 Beta (not Froyo) mentioned in this thread. The download link in the thread is dead, but I found it elsewhere (here). There's a 2nd file that's an update to the #369 kernel, but that link is dead as well and I haven't found an alternate yet.

From the looks of it, there are custom versions of ClockworkMod for each device. You can see here a download specifically for X5A's with and without a G-sensor. It also looks like you must have ADB set up on a computer to install it. That same link in this paragraph has experimental builds of X5A Froyo roms. I may or may not join you on this journey as, again, I've replaced my X5A w/ a gTablet before I even freakin' got it. Thank you, China. ha j/k

*Update: Did a Factory Data Reset and have a newer Market now. Downloaded & installed 2 apps successfully, then the tablet rebooted and won't install anything again. ha My luck.

So I tried the Froyo ROM and was having wifi drop along with the lingering Market failing to download. I went back to AsuRom 1.0 Beta and later found a market fix that has worked since.

It's a semi-lengthy process to change an AndroidID.

Some apps to look for to spice up your X5A:
z4root: to root
LCD Density: squeeze more out of your screen (requires root)
RotateD: manually rotate to portrait or landscape since we're w/o a G-sensor
ADW Launcher: replace the home screen & app drawer
