Hi everyone.

First time poster, long time lurker. :)

I've just come into possession of an AMD X6 1055T 95W chip and I'm currently pondering my options... which are, to either sell it on, or base a new build around it.

I have a budget of ~£800 and I'd be using it for a mix of gaming, media, web development, etc. A bit of an all rounder.

I've heard these 1055T chips clock to 3.8-4.0 GHz without much bother so I'd like to take that into consideration!

Currently thinking along the lines of...

Asus M4A89GTD PRO
Corsair XMS3 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz
ATI Radeon HD 6850

Any spec advice or wisdom from the resident forum experts would be much appreciated!

I'm assuming your primary concern for system requirements is gaming- realistically unless you're doing substantial professional work with huge, complicated image files or en/decoding a lot, this is a fair assumption.

In that case, I'd sell off the 1055T and replace it with an i5 760- the i5 is both cheaper and better at gaming. It's not a bad overclocker either- 20x200MHz seems to work very well! The 6850 and the RAM look good, but you'll have to replace the motherboard with an Intel one. What PSU are you thinking of?

If you're stuck, 95th's thread offers a lot of help in choosing parts.

Ok I'll bite.

I'd go with RJC's build - except replacing the mobo for the ASRock 890GX Extreme3 AMD 890GX (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard - as its a great board for the price! and replacing the Akasa Venom with a Thermaltake Frio

Stulid has "man flu" so is bound to be off top form :p

That and the fact you get a free game and a GTX470 :D

Is what I'd be looking at. Latest gen graphics, ability to CF later on, if you ever feel like you're loosing out on performance.

Good builds BUT WHY the crap corsair ram when the patriot is cheaper and much better ?

Corsair is a well-respected brand, offering excellent value for money, with a very good reputation for reliability, and is very popular among the overclocking community for getting the best out of a system in a trouble-free manner.

Feel free to substantiate your complaints about corsair and make a valid comparison between it and patriot however, if you have benchmarks or other vital information we are so evidently blind to.

Patriot better?

Its not as well established, its been proven to overclock WORSE, its heat dissipation isnt as good, it doesnt have lifetime warrranty.

Enough reasons? :p

Thanks for the advice & specs so far guys, all looks very agreeable!

Seems like my first decision is whether to hold on to this 1055T or go i5 760 as hybrid572 suggests.

My current machine is a Q6660, GA-P35-DS3L, 2GB OCZ Vendetta DDR2 6400 RAM, Samsung F3 1TB & Radeon HD 5550.

I've never been able to clock my Q6600 (VID: 1.325) much past 3.0 GHz on this board. It's been stable at 3.2 GHz but requires 1.4v under load to get there.

In your knowledgeable opinions, is it worth upgrading to a 1055T/i5 760 set up so close to Sandy Bridge/Bulldozer?

Am I better off getting a new board for my Q6600? Something P45 based maybe, with better RAM, and a GTX 460/HD 6850?

To be honest, the Q6600 is still a very good chip- pretty tip-top LGA775. The i5 760 is undoubtedly better, but many of us would recommend sticking with the Q6600 for the minute, and then reconsidering your options when SB and Bulldozer are released. Your RAM and GFX do look a little underpowered though, so that might be why you're feeling slow. What PSU do you have?

It's definitely worth upgrading the GFX card no matter what you do. The 460 (1 GB) and 6850 offer almost identical performance, so apart from brand loyalty and whether the drivers perform particularly better or worse for your OS/games, just take the cheaper option.

I'm not sure I'd recommend upgrading the motherboard as buying a 775 board is a false economy now, and 3.0GHz on 4 cores should be plenty enough, but upgrading to new RAM might give you the boost you need. Get 2x2G of Corsair, that'll likely help you a lot.

Thanks hybrid572, I appreciate the advice.

I understand that getting a new 775 board is probably not the brightest move, all considered.

Unfortunately though, this board (GA-P35-DS3L) doesn't support DDR3 or PCI-e 2.0 so it seems my upgrade options are a little limited with regards to RAM & GPU.

My PSU is a Cooler Master extreme Power 550W.

That PSU should be fine then, as I assume you got it within the past couple of years.

I completely get your apprehension in simply upgrading the RAM/GPU without the motherboard, but once you're upgrading everything except the CPU, it's really worth looking at a socket upgrade.

My gut instinct would be to sell your current CPU with mobo, GFX and RAM, as you'll still get loads of money for a Q6600- although I have no idea whether you'd get better money for parting it out- and your X6, and then use the money to build yourself up an i5 760 system.

Of course, if you're still happy you could wait for SB/BD on your current system, but you'll get a much better price for your Q6600 if you trade up sooner rather than later. You will notice a huge difference in your new system, and SB isn't expected to bring out anything that would make a current i5 gaming system particularly obsolete or even poor value.

In terms of the suggested specs above - don't get an ASrock board, they are the budget version of ASUS for a reason. Get a GTX470 over a HD6870, yes patriot are great for the price, but if you've got the money then Corsair should leave you feeling more confident (BTW Patriot warranty is lifetime)

As for you current rig - Q6600 + another 2GB should be fine for gaming now. I use mine at 3.0GHz and I'm fine for most games. However your motherboard is going to limit you a little - might be worth having a look for 2nd hand P45 on the cheap and then getting a better GPU.

With a better board and something like a GTX 470 I can't see you needing to upgrade for a while unless you are one of those people who needs the newest of the new, which considering you're on your Q6600 you don't appear to be.

Then you can spend the rest of the money on beer or a nice big screen and some nice speakers or have a great friday night :D

All depends if you're happy with "old tech".... thats my 2 cents that I'm going to get bashed for.
