x800 vs x1300 vs x1600 vs x1800

Now I'm a bit confused as in the old days a bigger number meant faster, now if that is still valid then why are the bigger numbers cheaper;

x800 £111
x1300 £45-50
x1600 £64-105
x1800 £140

Now i have a x600xt and wanted something a bit more meaty and so was looking at the x800 or x1800, but then the x1300 are cheaper than the x800 and surely they are better as bigger model number? So anyway what do i get for up to £150 (ish) inc. vat?

Or are Nvidia a better option?

Nah, it's not always true any more. Price tags are a better guide in this situation. The X1000 series all have more recent technology (i.e. shader model 3.0) but as you've noticed, cheap, as they're slower/have fewer pipelines etc.

If you can afford the x1800xt, get it! It's a bargain at that price, astonishing performance for relatively small cost. Check the graphics card forum to see it get recommended again, and again, and again... ;)

Best value for money, bang-per-buck card you can get right now. It's only £30 more than the x800 but it'll outstrip it by miles. At the moment there's no nvidia card at that price point that can match it's performance. The 7900GT is a fair match to it but it costs around £200.

Agreed, the x1800 XT blows those other cards you listed away, i went from an x800 XT PE to an x1800 XT 512mb, the performance increase is absolutely incredible. :)
