Hi All

I have narrowed my next agp (one more card before next full system upgrade) down to the ati x850xt but i was wondering if its worth waiting for the 7800gs, i mainly play bf2 online any reply would be appreiated.

ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB DDR3 VIVO TV-Out/DVI (AGP) or a 7800GS (AGP)

Thanks in advance

I would think about it very carefully before sinking £££ into a new AGP card, indeed it seems the easiest path (and possible cheapest) but upgrading to a PCI-Express system seems to offer the best *value*

X850XT is a great card btw, but I bought mine in PCI-Express and used the savings over AGP prices to go towards a new Mobo and CPU. . .

Hi,

yup I totally know where you are coming from. What VGA card are you using now and what sort of games do u play (or wanting to play through?)

It's not £1000 on a new system, you can do a complete *engine* overhaul for less than half of that (cost me £470).

What CPU are you currently running? AGP is more expensive than PCI-E and it's also a dieing format so you won't be able to go any further

If you're on Socket 939 or 754 you can buy a PCI-E board and a PCI-E X850XT for about the price of an AGP X850XT:

GX-058-PC PowerColor ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB DDR3 VIVO TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-058-PC)
£169.95 £169.95
Subtotal £169.95
VAT £29.75
Total £199.70

Socket 939 PCI-E:

GX-037-PC PowerColor ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-037-PC)
£129.95 £129.95
MB-120-AS Asus A8N5X nForce4 (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-120-AS)
£51.95 £51.95
Subtotal £181.90
VAT £31.84
Total £213.74

Socket 754 PCI-E:

GX-037-PC PowerColor ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-037-PC)
£129.95 £129.95
MB-113-AS Asus K8N4-E Deluxe nForce4 4X (Socket 754) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-113-AS)
£54.95 £54.95
Subtotal £184.90
VAT £32.36
Total £217.26

If that isn't an option then I'd go for the 7800GS over the X850XT

The 7800GS will be quicker if the previews are correct. It's also a latest gen card against a last gen card

If I were you I would go for the 7800GS and forget about upgrading. If I were to upgrade I would go for top of the range mobos + AMD X2s and not those cheap ones. But you just got a new house so the only option left is 7800GS :)
Go for it. :p

i am in the same situation as i have an aging 9800pro... i know i should go for a pci-e system, but the thing is if i go the pci-e route i wont upgrade for a year and when i do do the yearly upgrade it will be for the latest socket i.e am2 and not sticking with the 939.

so i might as well get the most of out of my current nforce 3 rig by upgrading to a 7800gs and then do a complete overhaul in a year...

also it will save me having to reinstall windows, take my rig apart etc.

7800gs for meeeee

Agree with what ajgoodfellow said about considering going to PCI-E (mobo & X850XT in PCI-E form cost about same as AGP X850).

Other than that i would say get whichever is cheaper, as both a close in performance & next will be new system for you, no need to spend extra money on old AGP system.

Was in this position till yesterday evening - took a compromise route and went for the 6800GS - i know that it wont get me working at 1600 X 1200 at the latest games however only £150 and allows me to save for the PCI upgrade in the near future (well.. end of 2006) - loved the 9800 Pro though - best buy ever...
