Been looking for a new upscaling DVD player for my new Samsung 32" LCD TV but may have overlooked using my Xbox 360 as a DVD player. How do you guys rate it? Im not looking for an absolutely amazing DVD player but something that looks quite impressive for about £60-100. Would I be better off just using my Xbox 360 and saving my cash?

I use my xBox360 as a DVD player in the bedroom with a Samsung 26" fed via VGA. It does an OK job, and the noise from the xBox360 isn't that loud (seem to be lucky with my 360).

I personally wouldn't bother with a seperate DVD player unless your 360 is too loud for you to watch films with.

Looks like I need to ask Santa for a VGA cable then :p

I shouldn't think the noise will be a problem in all honesty. I can't see myself playing many DVD's but its always nice to have things setup if you fancy whacking a dvd on.

SORRY, WHAT DID YOU SAY ? I CAN HEAR YOU FOR THE NOISE OF MY 360 PLAYING A DVD :D

seriously mate, dont do it to your ears, its actually a pretty good DVD player, its just a shame about the racket.

I think im getting old, ill be whinging about the bloomin kids playing football on the streets next :p

im pretty pleased at the dvd playback on mine, love how it upscales with the vga lead, i cant really hear mine either, its pretty quiet when playing dvd's

I have the 360 in my bedroom connected to a Sammy 26" LCD via component and am more than happy with dvd playback, picture is quality.

Picture on mine through a 26" Hitachi LCD is really nice, I like it.

I stopped using my DVD player because it's developed an annoying whirring noise, like ALL my DVD players do. I give up with them!

It's the best DVD player I have just because you can resume from where you left off from. Very good image quality through VGA, but sometimes it doesn't upscale the res I.E. The OC Series 1 off the top of my head, I end up with a picture in the middle of the screen - on a 22" CRT monitor. :)

I use my 360 to play all my DVDs. I have it conected via component to my HD72i HD projector and it is a very good player. My 360 is inside a cabinate with all my other AV stuff and cant be heard.

Before when I had it under my original TV I couldnt hear anythign anyway. These stories about the 360 being dead loud, imo, are rubbish. People blowing it out of proportion me thinks.

I think you would happy with it as a day to day player. I am.

ive got the samsung upscaling DVD player, i have it set up to HDMI on my Tv.

After watching a couple of films on it so far, cant say there's any real noticable improvement in the picture quality.

Definately not worth spending money on a dvd player if you have the 360 already

Besides, i think there's an HDMI cable for the 360

I've got my 360 hooked up to my HD projector by component so it won't upscale. IT looks worse than my entry level Toshiba DVD player. And the sound is noticeably worse.

I've had a few upscaling dvd players ended up selling them as the difference in quality between them and the 360 was negligible. Noise is the only downside - not a prob depending on the size of your room or whether you have it in a cabinet.

New LCD TV connected to my xbox via the VGA cable, however when I play a DVD it has bands around the top edges of the screen (as if trying to watch 16:9 on a 4:3 display). I can remove these by using the horizontal stretch setting within the xbox DVD control panel but surely stretching the image defeats the point of 1:1 pixel mapping? Am I doing anything wrong or is this expected?

Few movie dvds are 16:9. You'll end up with borders on virtually everyone you watch, unless you stretch the image to fill the screen (not good imo)

I don't know why people moan about the noise from the 360 when playing DVD's because I've never noticed this! When playing games yes, but not on DVD's.
