noob question but ive looked around and cant get a solid answer

does the HDMI cable from the XBOX 360 provide 5.1 surround sound and full 1080p WITHOUT the use of the optical cable

my tv and receiver are full 1080p compatable
 
Yes it does.

Although having never done it myself, I presume you plug the 360 into the audio receiver and then another HDMI cable goes from that receiver to the TV for video?

It does not im afraid, there is an offical hdmi cable or an audio dongle that allows the optical to work at the same as the HDMI (for video).

What ????

To the OP, yes the HDMI carries 5.1 as well as full HD so no need for an optical cable.
