Hi lads yesterday i saw the windows media centre on the xbox and thought id give it a try setting up as i had some movies to watch on my pc and couldnt be bothered to burn them to disc etc. So basically i set up the windows media thing on pc and xbox and put some movies on share when i went to my xbox all the movies couldnt be played saying that it didnt have the right codec.

Was wondering if any of you know wat file type / codec the movies need to be in most of the movies are in avi format .. but couldnt play them. Just wondered if anyone else had same problem or knows of a way to get em to play. If not is there a lead that i could connect my pc to my tv ? only problem is it would need to be like a 4m lead dont no if any around

Ty for ur help

I've never any problems playing AVI files from the PC to the 360, however I do remember various updates were needed first. Fortunately these are automatic if your 360 is hooked up to the internet.

However I always preferred the manual access folder method over the Media Centre. Did you try it this way?

I don't have a 360 anymore, but trying to remember you just click My Xbox then scroll across to Video library. From here you should see your PC listed then it's just a case of selecting the video file. This bypasses the Media Centre.

easiest way is to download ps3 media server, run it setup the files u want to share then go to videos on 360 and click ps3 media server then boom, your stuffs.

What type of files & what operating system? Are you using Media Centre on the Xbox or browsing through folders?

With Windows 7 you can stream everything including mkv files just need DivX Tech Preview. No need to transcode with that PS3 MC / TVersity rubbish ;)

Out of luck with Vista/XP mind.

i am using windows vista premium 64 bit and the file extensions are avi's. basically i put the video file up for share on the pc then went onto the xbox went into video libary and tried to play it through there and said incorrect codec etc. I will try the ps3 version suggested and see how that goes
