Is it possible/straightforward enough to to connect my 360 to my laptop via the ethernet cable supplied and then use it's built-in wireless to connect to live through my router ?

Hope that makes sense !!

it makes perfect sense.. But i had lots of problems trying a similar setup on mine. Becuase u cant really use internet connection sharing with a router. So you might have to bridge the connections or somthing.. i had to give up in the end and just get a long ethernet cable. Which is a bit of a pain.. as £60 for a wireless adapter just seems like a rip off.

You should be able to create a software bridge between the laptop's ethernet adapter and its wifi adapter which will enable the 360 to connect to live via a crossover cable to the laptop.
Select both adapters in the network settings part of win xp control panel, right click and select bridge connection.

I'll give it a go tomorrow, another question : how will this affect my download limit with wanadoo ? I have 2Gb limit a month, will it use much of this ?

I don't think gaming uses much bandwidth (unless the voice data changes it significantly?). I think xbox live updates are generally quite small but the 360 demos are several hundred mb.

from personal experience, avoid wireless for games at all costs! i had the exact same setup, 360 getting connect thru crossover cable connected to laptop on the wireless network, and i just kept dropping all the time, the wireless was fine for browsing but just not for gaming, in the end, i purchased a massive phoneline extension, and the 360 is now plugged into the router direct. No more droppage! (yay 1st post etc too)
