Hi,

thinking of getting an XBOX and wondered if the VGA connector is worth getting. I have a 22" CRT sitting in my room and want to use that instead of my normal TV. (non LCD)

What's the quality like, is it worth getting over scart or component?

Any problems associated with it.

Will I be able to scale the resolution?

Cheers.

You'll be limited to 50/60Hz which on a CRT monitor will be quite nasty. I would imagine the picture will always be stretched to full screen also.

I suppose the 50/60hz would be an issue with the flickerring, I could adjust the screen with the osm.

What's the picture quality like though?

I would imagine the image quality would be better than a CRT TV. For a while I played on a 17" TFT and although you could select it's native resolution of 1280x1024 there were some games that looked squashed such as PGR 3 and Oblivion.

I used to use VGA on my 19' TFT until I recently upgraded to a HDTV. VGA is fine mate and gives a clear crisp picture, however, since your limited to 60hz as has been said you are going to be subject to a poor refresh rate. I guess the only way to find out is to bite the bullet and get one.

I currently use a Mitsubishi diamond plus 200 22" CRT screen with the official m$ VGA cable. The image quality I personally get is superb and destroys the smaller LCD monitor I ocasionally use as a spare, and imho I get a far nicer picture than many LCD tv's I have experienced.

As for stretching. Most games force themselves into letterbox mode so you lose some size, others will run 4:3 and fill out the screen sometimes this will look a little stretched but not to the point where it annoys too much. The dsahboard will always be 4:3 ratio if you set the correct res and looks lovely. As for refresh rates I really havn't noticed at all, tell me what to look for and I will check it out for you.

Hope that helps out a little.

Thx for the replies.

I have a Mitsibushi 22" DiamondPro so I think I will use that for starters. I also have a 19" TFT aswell so my options are good.

Thanks again.

I use the VGA cable and for me, it seems way better than the component, especially now with the extended mode in the dashboard. Rich colours, deeper blacks and clearer resolution, go for it :)

You can't stop 60 Hz from flickering just by adjusting the monitors OSD settings. If it's the only option you have though, then it's worth trying, but don't use it in a dark room, don't sit too close and don't use it for hours on end without a break. It will probably look quite dull too since PC monitors are setup for reading comfort usually, CRTs aren't that bright to start with, and CRTs fade over time. I would eventually think about getting a HDTV.

Get the official VGA cable btw, it's reckoned to be better than the 3rd party ones.

VGA is great, works well on my 22" LCD widescreen. only problem you will have (not really a prob but...) is that most games are widescreen, so you'll get bars top and bottom and a smaller picture as a result. That was the driving reason behind me getting a 22" instead of persevering with my 19"

I do have a DELL 22" widescreen TFT 1680x1050, will this be ok?

Does it look good even though it's not using native resolution?
