I’m really torn. Now the hubbub has died down a bit, I’m thinking I should stick with my original plan of buying a PS5 and muddling along with my 1070. The Xbox Series S kind of ensures that my PC will keep up with games at 1080p60 for another few years yet. And I know I’d miss my Steam library if I swapped.

Hmm seems like I was mistaken then. I foolishly though that it was fully backwards compatible with nearly everything.

I think because it’s using a software emulation layer, it brings all kinds of licensing issues into play. It’s a shame really because there are some great titles still missing. But some is better than none. Xbox still haven’t talked much about BC yet on Series consoles. Are all the Xbox 360 games at 720p now going to get enhanced to 4K? Are all Xbone games? Which are going to get their frame rates doubled?

Does anybody know the process of pre-ordering with the All Access thingy?

I'm assuming that you will have to clear a credit check and stuff?

That's a good question.

Did anyone here use it previously to buy the Xbox One S or Xbox One X? Or used Klarna with any other retailer? Would be interested to know what things they want to know when you apply. Income? Employment? That sort of thing or just a check with credit agencies?

I think the second most exciting thing I've read (after the SSD tech being first) is the support for Dolby Vision.

From what I can gather, TVs with Dolby Vision don't require any adjustments whatsoever when playing back Dolby Vision media. No sliders for colour, brightness, HDR, gamma, etc. It just works the same on any TV that is certified for it. That is mega.

I'm going to wait on Digital Foundry analyses etc until purchasing

Siding on a Series X atm though

The memory seems a bit odd on the Series S ok you can say lower 1440p assets but it's a lot of throughput of data going around at 1440p/60 ?

2 gig of the 10gb is at less than 60mbit/s from specs ? (Less than a One S ?)

I wouldn't worry about it. The capabilities have already been demonstrated running Gears 5 multiplayer at 120fps.

There's a lot of crap going round on Twitter now from people who don't even have developer kits of the hardware.

It’s worth mentioning that the PS5 only has 800Gb (approx) and there is no equivalent smart delivery process on Sony side that I’ve heard of.

There's no need for it. The two PS5 SKUs are the same bar the optical drive. And PS5 games won't be running on PS4s, Sony will have them listed as separate items on the store.

Xbox Series S was designed to be the most affordable next generation console and play next generation games at 1440P at 60fps. To deliver the highest quality backwards compatible experience consistent with the developer’s original intent, the Xbox Series S runs the Xbox One S version of backward compatible games while applying improved texture filtering, higher and more consistent frame rates, faster load times and Auto HDR.”

I think it was pretty much a given that it wouldn’t run Xbox One X versions of games given the RAM discrepancy.

Yeah, if it wasn't for the shortage of RAM, I would fully expect the XSS to play the Xbone games in Xbone X mode. Heck, I even expected some kind of technical trickery to workaround that missing 1GB of RAM.

I think the key thing about lower resolutions on a 4K TV is to have the HUD at native 4K. When text and game are at 1440p, I can notice. But if the game is running at 1440p and the text is 2160p then I can't notice. As you know though, I do sit only 3ft away (50" TV is used as a PC monitor).
