Finished downloading games after getting the S last week. In total I've got 102 games installed between the internal storage and a 2TB external hard drive. But the internal storage only has enough space for the following:

Call of Duty Cold War
Destiny 2
Fortnite
Forza Horizon 4
Haven
Planet Coaster
Rainbow Six: Siege
Yes, Your Grace

Considering the first 2 games take up absolutely tons of space I'd say that's pretty good going. Plus, with the other 94 games you have installed I'm sure you'll have plenty to play :p

I am not even using an SSD as external, just a 2TB 3 year old USB I had knocking around and its totally fine. At least for transfer speeds and older games, they all work surprisingly quickly.

Xbox Series S - Currently showing stock on Argos for those who may be interested.

With all the praise that Series S owners are giving it, I'm going for this. Fed up of waiting for X to become available. I'll use my MS reward points on the extra 1TB SSD now instead.

Uh-oh. I've just been charged on my CC and the order hasn't completed. So no order confirmation but a charge made. Crap.

Also using a spindle, and I think it works fine. FF15 which is known for horrible loading speeds, is comparable to ssd speeds on ps4 pro loading from my external. It took 17 minutes to move it to my internal, which for a 90 gig game isnt bad going.

Couldn't resist, the wired setup I'm using is annoying, at least this works with the xbox wireless protocol and has an xbox button.

They won’t run from an external drive.
Here is a Digital Foundry speed comparison video --> https://youtu.be/7y-Fy1Q2O2k

Pretty much any SSD will do. You can only play backward compatible games (Xbox/360/Xbox One) via the external drives. When the Series games arrive they will only play via the internal drive.
Games built for Series S and X will only run from internal storage (or the official expansion). You can store these games on an external drive, but they need to be transferred to internal storage (or the official card) when you want to play them. Only Xbox Original, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games can be played from an external drive.

Your alternatives are:
  • Official 1TB expansion card (~£220)
  • 1TB SSD as a stop-gap (~£80 rather than ~£200 for 2TB)
  • An external hard drive (£Cheap)
Personally, I use a 2TB external hard drive. But if I was buying something specifically for Series S today, it'd be a 1TB external with a view to buying the official drive when the price is more reasonable. If you're spending 2TB external money, you're as well just buying the official expansion; while it's half the storage, it'll be more convenient long-term.

Thanks for all your help and advice guys- much appreciated. :)

I have opted for a 1TB SSD for now and will wait to see if the official add on drive comes down in price next year

Just a quick heads up to say VERY online have stocks of the Series S as of 11.54am today if any one is looking for one. :)

Very also have it with decent cashback/discount codes.

I was tempted but the Cyberpunk comparisons were enough for me to decide to hold out, i know it's probably just badly optimised but at least the extra power allows for poor design in games.

Quite a lot, £249. It is a wireless mechanical keyboard and a good mouse though so probably 70-80 over buying them separately. I've just given it a couple of hours playing Cold War and it feels the same as the wired setup I was using previously except it sits nicely on my lap, hasn't got cables snaking across the living room floor and I don't have to use a flattened cardboard box to sit it on. Plus you can navigate through the xbox UI without keep hot swapping to the controller. Totally worth it for me, very happy so far.

£249!

Bloomin hell, they must be laughing all the way to the bank.

I never understood gaming mice. Like the old saying it is the player that makes the boots not the boots that makes a player. Used to play wow with a semi pro CS Source player and he used a classic ms ball mouse but was God like!

Then again having a package like that to just pick up and play on your Xbox is very tempting.

I noticed yesterday Microsoft dont have blocking in place for clips/screenshots which I think is great, sony allowing dev's to do that is so anti consumer.
