Well at the moment doing a battle for a Gen8 that comes with 1TB drive and a copy of win 2008 server so is it worth it £175 at the moment.

Not a bad price at all, shame your not a student as if you can get hold a dreamspark account you can get the server versions free. My N54L cost £110 so gen 8 at that price with server 2008 is good price.

Not sure how far to take the price :( if there are free system that can do better

I have just bought a Gen8, for £144.99 after cashback. I've chosen to use XPEnology, as I bought it to upgrade my 1 bay Synology NAS and I love the Synology software.

So, +1 vote on XPEnology

I'm looking at £250 inc a 3TB hgst drive.

Or even more with the 2008 server software. Not sure how far to bid

As I'm tight I might just wait.

The thing with WS2008 is that it's essentially windows, which can be a good or bad thing!

I run WS2008R2 (MSDN Subscription) on an N54L and it's so easy to find windows versions of just about everything you need and I find maintaining it far easier and more flexible than my QNAP and Synology boxes..

I've just ordered the Lenovo ThinkServer TS140 (Xeon 1225v3) and will upgrade to WS2012 and I can see that running absolutely everything I'll ever need for some time to come, the only downside with the ThinkServer is it's a more traditional PC layout in terms of HDDs etc, no swappable bays, but honestly I upgrade HDD's once in a blue moon, so a small price to pay!! and for £219, significantly cheaper then the usual QNAP/Synology stuff..

I'd go with CentOS... it's what my webserver's running and it's been a favourite of mine for years.

The Microsoft OSes have terrible threaded optimisations... to the point Microsoft don't even use their own OS for their own web/file servers... they use CentOS.

If peak transfer speeds are of any concern to you, the Windows OS will be OK, but CentOS or XPEnology will likely be quicker.

What do you want to do with the server? Are you going to benefit from Windows at all?
